Hey All, I’m posting this to a number of forums that I lurk and post at because I feel the answers might vary a bit and that might be very important. My question is this: For those of us who “Front” the band (Lead Singer) and book the gigs and do the publicity ect…but do not have a permanent set of players we play with, what do you feel a fair rate to pay folks to come and learn/practice your new songs before a gig and what would be an standard % split between all the players after doing a gig? What do you think would be fair? And FYI - all players are presently non-union by choice right now

Steve, I think this varies by a WIDE margin ...
What kind of gig? What level of visibility? How "pro" are the people you are bringing in? Are they regular bandmates, or truly session players? Is it "just a gig" to them or are they hungry to play?
I've paid (and been paid) anything from nothing for rehearsals to a lump sum for gig plus X number of rehearsals. Some musicians won't back out of their driveway for less than a certain amount of pay on a gig.
I know a fairly well-known (in my area, at least) guitarist who heads his own band, which is mostly a pickup band of regular people he calls on (for any given gig, it's going to be one of three people on drums, bass, etc, and they've all played together in various projects/gigs for years). We did a gig with him and asked how much his band needed to get paid and he said, "well, I don't care if I personally make anything, but I need at least $100 for each of my guys. And I don't want that coming out of my pocket."
Other players will think more as a "team" and be satisfied with whatever is their fair share of the take ... that may be everyone splits equal, or that may be the bandleader taking 10 to 15% above what everyone else would get.
Is this the kind of input you are looking for?

Geekgurl: Yes, I'm interested in any information on what people are doing and what they think is fair. I too have played for the fun ($0) and have been paid well for playing gigs but not for practices although I totally understand why certain musicians need to. I'm just trying to get a feel for what other folks are doing. Thanks for your reply.

This depends on the gig, the money, and what the leader expects to get from it.

I'd love to get paid for band rehearsals. Well, technically I do get paid via satisfaction of making good music. But to be on a level where I'd actually be getting paid to learn other's material is foreign to me. It almost sounds stressful, actually.
I'm no great session bassist, so perhaps that's why I feel that way.

I've been in a couple of bands where we hired a drummer or a guitarist for certain gigs. We paid a set fee based on the gig that included a 4-5 hours of rehearsals ahead of time. I've also hired a drummer on an hourly basis and paid half-rate for rehearsals. Generally, though, if someone sits in on a gig, then they get an equal cut of the net.
