Very cozy place you have here Jeff I believe I'll get on the record and start a topic in it.
What I love about being the former babysitter of the drummer whose band I've come to see is, when she lets me help her carry in her gear, thus allowing me to (unintentionally) pass myself off as one of them, and thwart the cover charge.
Good times.
Anybody else want to share what they love about being in/being with/pretending-to-be-with the band?

Thanks for visiting, Programgirl. And yes, as many band members here can probably tell you, being "with the band" doesn't exclude people who are actually in bands.
In other words, I wish I had a dollar for every time one of my fellow musician friends tries to skip out on the $3 cover when arriving at some of our gigs.

Hiya Jeff...I noticed that Nursers has become "David Holloway" and you've become Jeff Klopmeyer, so, I'm Ted Hoffman. Big change, huh?

Full names: the hot new thing to do, Ted.
Actually, I was kinda following the lead of John Knutson and Greg Slusser... er, Bunny and FoxTick.

I had to buy my own beer though. In my case, it wasn't to avoid the cover, it was to avoid being carded. I was 16...too young to drink in the bars with the then 18 year old drinking age, back in Michigan in about 1973. My 18 year old buddy Greg had an EV speaker that a local guitarist wanted to buy to put in the back of his Twin. I wanted to go to the bar to hear the band. Solution...Greg says "Let's go...YOU carry the speaker in. They won't card you". I did, and they didn't. And that was my first foray into a bar to hear a band.

All these last names - what a trip!
My favorite part about being "in the band" at bar gigs is the DRINK TICKETS! YES!

I'll change mine to my full name for $5...and a pack of Dean Markleys. And a Coke. To go. Thanks.

Back around the mid-80's two guys my now ex-wife worked with were in a cover band. We were among several couples that used to go to their shows. The band was very good, excellent musicians. I would promote their shows with my other friends and work colleagues - talk up the band, put up posters, encourage people to go hear them. Some of the clubs used to give the band or people with the band drinks for half-price, so I would tell the bartender I was with the band. Usually the manager would then come over to the table and ask me if I was with the band. I would say, yes, I do promotion for them. I always got a dirty look, too.
The band did great covers of The Cars "Bye Bye Love" and Tom Petty's "Breakdown". They also did "Rawhide". Those were good times!

Yes, but "Doug Osborne" has a cool spy-like ring to it. I suggest you stick with it.

I am in the band, and I'm finding myself promising to hand out my drink tickets to friends if and when they'll come to a show

Me & my friends used to organise concerts so that we could hear bands that never would have played here otherwise. It was also a way for ourselves to play outside of town - exchange gigs.
This hobby of hours became a growing enterprise... it didn't take long until we had a club of our own and a yearly outdoor festival and a record label.
It all started with a simple high school concert.
