I want to get a home studio system to record my daughter ( jazz vocal and piano ) and son's rock band. I am leaning towards a computer based system using either Pro Tools or Logic Pro.
I would appreciate any thoughts regarding these programs. I have the use of some Audix microphones that can be used to mic the acoustic piano and instruments , but will need to buy a microphone better suited for my daughters vocals.
I anticipate spending in the $5k - $7k range and would like to acquire the best recording program, computer, and vocal mic combination.
Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm a proponant/user of Logic, but in your case I'd give the nod to PT. Here's why. Both basic programs cost about the same, but PT costs more to outfit with periferals. That difference is offset by the price of a new computer (Logic = Mac only: PT = PC or Mac). Cost becomes a wash. The real reason for PT is the learning curve. Logic is a very deep program with some amazing features and included soft instruments, and by the time you figure it all out the kids will have kids. PT is much simpler to get up and running. Either package can be put together within your price range. I don't know how deep and how far you want to take the project, but a stand-alone DAW might be a simpler solution.
Good luck, Paul (Budd Lake)

Since you have little experience on DAW recording systems, it is tough to advise you. The right audio software preference is much like buying running shoes... you like Adidas, I like Rebok, the next guy likes New Balance, and they all get us down the road. In the case of audio software, I happen to like SAWStudio and Sequoia. But Sonar, Vegas, PT, Nuendo and many other choices all do a credible job. There is no clear winner.
Everyone used to tell me to try the demo. That was stupid, because as I had no experience in using the softwares, and it cost me per minute to download the softwares (at 300 baud), it was a big expense and big frustration.
So all I can suggest to you now is to find some other guys in your area who are recording, and go and see what the others are using and how it works. Then make your choices based upon how the software looks and feels to you, rather than by ad claims.

I personally dont like logic, but i really like the way bill puts it... its really like shoes, they all get you down the road. Its all up to personal preference. If its your first real home setup perhaps $5-7K is a bit much to spend. you can get a basic DAW setup for much cheaper, and spend the money you'd save on some decent mics. PT is a very powerful program. You could use it with just knowing a few of the basic functions. But theres so much to that program that you can pick up with time... I'm certified in it for **** sake and i still dont know some of the functions. just my $.02 Good luck to you.

All, Thanks for your thoughts. I will look into a DAW solution to start. It seems that PT might be a better choice for me if I go the computer recording route. "Simpler to get started with" is a strong selling point.
A friend has offered to record my daughter for her college application. He uses a simpler Apple program that does basic recording.
I sprung for a Neuman K105 and Aphex 207D preamp, so I have a start on the mic front.
regards Dennis

Good advice given in the above posts and the comments about choice are so true. One thing about Pro Tools, it is an industry standard that many professional studios use. There are different levels of add ons with pro tools if you desire to go that route. Good luck!

Protools is anything but simple, and there is a pretty big learning curve.
If this is for home/hobby recording, I'd recommend Mackie Tracktion, with one of their interfaces. Much less money, better quality converters and pres than anything Digi makes in the Le line, and much simpler learning curve. The Mackie pres and converters are great in the Onyx gear, most of their hardware interfaces come with Tracktion, which has some great plugin dynamics and fx.

Ive read so many posts and Bill hits the nail on the head every time, with some humor too....I personally use Nuendo, but I like PT as well....Sequoia is incredible though too, and I know people who are in love with Logic...They are all good!

Digidesign Protools is hardware dependent, meaning you must buy Digi hardware to use their software. No other DAW does this. It's Digi's way of preventing piracy, but, as they discontinue hardware support every few years, while not really developing anything that much better in the way of "upgrade" the user ends up dropping tons of money into hardware just to stay software compliant.
I'd recommend anything but Protools.
However, given the OP is over a year old, I suspect the decision was made a long time ago....

Would you consider something like a Tascam US122? (Every major manufacturer has a similar 2 channel device. running on either firewire or USB.) Under $200 gets and interface and a couple of starter-level softwares that do a credible job, let you get credible results, and let you get a handle on the process.
