I've been a pretty minimal contributor to the forums lately, but is that happening with everybody? JJ, everything okay?

The EQ forums have become a ghost town....and I'm not going to speculate as to why, since I’ve already done that a few times in the past and only gotten a whole bunch of people's feathers all ruffled over it.
From what I’ve seen…there is...NADA...ZILCH...ZIP...ZERO...effort being made by MP or by EQ to support these forums...to try and prop them back up...to get people interested in hanging around here and posting again like in the old days before the big exod....ahhh, I won't say it.
The only forums that have any real life at MP anymore are the Guitar Player and Keyboard forums. I hang mostly on the GP forums. What’s really odd to me...is that with all those guitar and keyboard players...you would think more of them would be doing enough serious recording to be posting about it on these forums... ...but very few of them venture over here anymore. Most of those people just focus on guitar or keyboard issues/topics/questions...with rare exceptions.
And I can't help but notice that EQ magazine is following the EQ forum model. It appears to be slowly dwindling down...getting thinner and thinner with each month's issue. The monthly Wal-Mart flyers are starting to catch up....
I have no idea what's going on at MP headquarters...especially since there are new owners now. It seems like the last several years...every 2-3 years we went through a new "experiment" at EQ... ...as they looked for that magic formula of advertisements, articles and reviews that would increase readership interest...and sales. I wonder what's going to be next....?

It's an odd one. Like a party with 1 or 2 people in it - it's hard to keep going. But with the 1 or 2 people in it, it's hard to ATTRACT other people in too.
We've run some topics up that got some nice and avid responses, but not everything caught on. I myself had real trouble, as the site (for some reason) didn't store my user and password (unlike most) and I had to log in each time, causing me to LOOK UP my log in info each time. Too much trouble.

In general, I see online forums falling off. Myspace was HUGE a year ago, but people are starting to get away from it just now. Like ebay, it WILL be around forever, but not with the fever it once had.
I've seen too many forums where people say "What's the best mic pre?" over and over. Many have gone through the "What's your favorite Beatles album?" into all kinds of minutia that ebds up rather uninteresting.
I HOPE we can find some ideas that stick: I think some version of Wikipedia information storage and active membership is the key. Many times, I use forums for OLD topics that I suddenly need info on...

I've been fading away from all the forums the last year, myself. After the ear problems, which were just another in a small list of things, I decided to put audio on the back burner and head back to a desk job. I just was not able to pull off my big jump into recording. My website is about to redirect to my personal website, neither of which have been updated in quite a while.
Like Brian mentioned, the posts of real substance seem very few and far between these days. Not that I am looking for real brain testers, but I see more of the newbie posts than higher-end techy posts. That isn't bad, mind you. But, I still see those posts... - "Which cheap mic with the best sound" - "How to get that studio sound on my stuff" - "I'm just getting started..." . I don't long for those 200+ post threads regarding summing bus errors in ProTools. I do like to learn and share tid-bits. I just don't have that level of participation, anymore.
Times have changed, I find. Six or so years ago, people thought I was crazy to record to PC from a 16-channel mixer. Three years ago, it seemed everyone wanted to do it. This year, it seems everyone is switching over to PC-based recording.
I am not giving up my gear, yet! I have to admit that I thought it was pretty cool to use some of the mics I've collected to record the audio for a computer demo AVI, or to make Skype calls... One day, I plan to have that room that really makes the difference. But, it will probably always be a hobby for me.
Give the forums some time. I think they may evolve to be a little different, but still survive. I am trying get a little time back in these forums, too. Let's hope others will be doing the same.

Well...I think there were a lot of good threads that fell somewhere in-between the extreme debates and the newbie curiosities.
I know there are still a lot of people that do record...and who are serious about it (not just something they are already getting over). It was nice having the "hands-on" discussions with other people who are doing the same things I'm doing. Sometimes new ideas would emerge...or it was good to just refresh some old ones. I do see that on other forums there still exist those groups of people... ...so their lack of presence here is not echoed throughout audio forum land.
This place got kicked in the gut...and left to die slowly...
But, besides that...I think many who are actively involved with audio...just returned back to their work once the novelty of "forums" wore off... ...especially when the forums were no longer getting any real support.
I only poke my head in once a day to see if there's anything new...but I don't dwell in the forums like in the old days.

I think you are right about people just going about their business, too busy to do the chat thing as much as before.
As fo the ears... I caught a nasty flu that plugged my ear canals, last year. Then, I made an urgency run down the mountain. I didn't think about what the presure change would do going down and back up. I was lucky I didn't blow the drums out. I damaged the inner ear. Now, I have some 10 or 12 tinnitus tones in both my ears, the levels varying with the days. And, I have a short threshold of pain. I haven't checked the volume lately, but 85dB is about as painful as my experience of sitting in 5th row left (20 feet from the speakers) at the 1984 SRV concert in LA. I drive myself crazy with the remote trying to watch a movie on the home theater -- up for voice and way down for the action/effects.
Well, that's my sob story. As I get more accustomed to how to work with these ears, I am sure I'll get back into the grind.
