Okay, say we have all the money in the world, to record drums, we need seperate mics for each drum, then the mixer, then goes into the computer... How do we make it so each drum is a seperate track, what eqiupment would we use?

You need to get an interface with enough channels to do what you need to do. Something like the MOTU 24 I/O.
Your mixer will need direct outputs on each channel, or you could go with outboard mic preamps.

Well, DO you need seperate mics for each drum? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A pair of high quality overheads can get the whole kit in a very natural way.

But you need a mixer that will enable you to use either direct outs or have enough subgroups to feed enough tracks on your recording device, and your recording device needs to handle the input for at least as many tracks as you have direct output channels or subgroup outputs. Or you could use all seperate mic pres.

There are a lot of popular interfaces and softwares out there... I happen to be partial to RME or Lynx interface cards, Mytek or Larvy converters, SAWStudio or Samplitude software, and too many mic pres and mics to list... but there are plenty of viable options.

I've found the minimalist way to be a great way of recording drums. I usually have 4 mics on the drums. One snare, one bass, and 2 overhead. I've used some basic mics before and got great sound. I had a setup once like this using 2 Audio Technica Condensers for the overheads and an SM58 IN the bass drum and an SM57 for the snare. I recorded using a Mackie board and lined right in through RCA on my laptop's soundcard...J

Let's not confuse "minimalism" and a substandard rig. There's good minimalism and bad minimalism. Refer to my two mic drum thread, using a U47 a D12 and Neves.
