I think that musically speaking, an executive producer is making decisions that have been typically areas where A&R people like to stick their nose in. These are people who don't want to get their hands dirty and do the real production work, but want to listen to rough mixes and say things like "It's too plodding. It needs to be more lilting." Or something like, "The snare needs to be louder."

When you see a TV or movie, with the name of the star listed a 'executive producer', what do you think it mean that they really DID, to advance the production aspect of the project? so often it is just a tacked on ego title, with little to no real useful purpose, except as noted by JJ. Sometimes, the star really got behid the project, it was their baby, and they made sure it got made, but often as not, it is just a way to allow the star to piss in the stew.

"Executive" in front of most any job that requires work and knowlege and ability is usually at most a supervisory position. You know, like Bush is our Chief "Executive"... like that...

I thought "executive producers" were the ones that mostly controlled (worried over) the spending of the production budget.

In movies, the executive producer is typically the personn who puts together the funding ... or it'sthe owner of the production company. With Sea Biscuit, Toby Maguire bought the film rights to the book, etc. and he was one of the executive producers.

In my "restaurant/chef days"...we always use to kid about what the "executive chef" did.

We could identify what all the other chef stations we responsible for...but not the "executive chef"...?

Then we realized that the "executive chef" was the person who got/kept all the kudos when things went right...and delivered the negative critiques to the working chefs when things went wrong! \:D

I guess that's about the same thing for an "executive producer" in the studio! ;\)

I like Bill's point about TV/film "executive" producers.
If you notice, sometimes there are as many as a dozen "executive" producers on a single episode of a TV show, for instance, & they may vary from episode to episode.
Often these are vanity titles or granted as an additional montary perk.

I'd imagine the same thing is now being applied at higher levels of the music biz...although in projects involving several separate producers for different tracks, an exec.prod. may oversee the whole thing.
Doe that jibe with the cases you're citing?

There's no question that it CAN be, and often is, an 'honourary" title given to someone who is not really producing but wants to be 'acknowledged'.

But I've also seen cases where, for exaple, a producer has made records ewithe artiste but for whatever reason cannot make this one... so he suggests someone to do it on the day to day basis but says essentially "I'll still keep my hand in and see that you're getting on all right..."
Thats is a REAL executive producer example. (in my view).

I once offered to do all the preproduction arranging and song selection with the band and then I only popped in form time to time (more like an A&R weasel) once they started the actual recording.
The producer, who I had recommended, was a great engineer and very good with dealing with the band and getting good performances... but he knew he couldn't get the arrangments done on his own and he didn't feel comfortable selecting the songs.. and so on.
So I functioned as "executive producer" in order to make everyone (including the label) comfortable with the situation.

Lastly there ARE some people whose input may indeed be so valuable to a particular artiste that even though it IS only listening to the mixes and commenting (as JJ suggested) or saying "I think you need another song for a single", or whatever, that they are worth having as exec producer... even if only to keep the artiste confident.

Record producers are like film directors. Yes, we are responsible for the budget but we're not the money rasisers, like in film. We're the hands-on 'director' of recording.
