I like it when I've had something for a while and FINALLY realize that it's really good. I bought this baby Marshall head in a NYC shop a few years ago. It's a 30-watter from the 1980's, so it's kinda handy for the studio, but nothing fancy or valuable.

I've never used it much (one channel has a "too thick" distortion). But I've finally got around to trying out for some tracks and everything I do on it sounds amazing. Better than my other very rare and classic amps.

Today I was listening to a track and thinking - THAT guitar sound works everywhere. It has all the good elements, and maintains them no matter what system plays it back...

Every rediscover something, or finally find out what it WAS good for?

I use to have one of those. It had a master volume and an effects loop. I don't know where mine went. I've been looking for it. It's a great amp if you want that JCM type sound without having to play at 120 dbs.

I recorded a guy, several years back, who needed a heavy metal grunge sound. He pulled out this little Gorilla amp -- 5 watts with a 6-inch driver. We crammed an SM-57 on the grill and packed pillows all around it. He cranked that thing into distortion, and put down a killer track.

The other night I went back to a trusty guitar amp to add reverb to a track, moved on to another song and when my assistant came back played the mix back for him. He immediately asked what the "room" was on certain mix elements and he was noticing what i re-discovered earlier, the Magnatone.

For every time that happens i have others where my memory of something isn't quite what it is now. Most notably as of late, the yellow Fender 9v practice amp from the 80s under a pillow captured by a hot rodded Realistic PZM.
