In the interest of not hijacking the EMT thread I thought I'd bump this topic here. JJ, you're board doesn't have recall does it ? Do you take pics ? Write it all down ? A good assistant ?

Here's my recall process: All the fader moves are stored in the automation, and then my asst. takes a digital camera and shoots everything. He then does a text file of the patch bay which is stored with the digital photos.

I'm not sure that I could recreate a mix 100% to where somebody says "don't change a thing, except pull that one thing up". I'm not doing important enough records where they have a budget for that kinda thing. Besides, if we ever recall a mix, they want lots of little changes, so I'd say I get about 90% there, but then the track ends up getting more separation or whatever. But I had to do two recalls last week and the band was very happy with the new mixes.

Regardless, for every session, I made sheets with diagrams of each room and the piano soundboard. My assistant is instructed to illustrate where each mic is placed, and on the other side of the sheet is the signal path with room for writing down the settings. I try to keep on him to write down my EQ settings right then and there, and not later, because I might want to use the same EQ for s different instrument, and then if we have to fix something up from the original setting, we better have it written down. I have a wonderful assistant though. He does some bone head stuff every once in a while, because he's young, but I wouldn't trade him for anything. (I have a vendetta against some asshole who tried to steal him from me as a personal fuck you to me.) But if you want to know the secret to a successful recall, it's having a good assistant!

I thought I was the only one who couldn't make a recall match the original if my life depended on it! Here at Full Sail, before we learn how to work on the larger-format consoles and DAWs, we do lots of those kind of exercises. In one class near the beginning of my studies, we had 3 days to work on a mix, all analog except a digital hard disk recorder as the source. We were given recall packs and I did my darndest to keep it accurate. But each day I came in, the mix would have a different sound and a different feel. The first day I had a very tranquil vibe going on and things sounded great. Each subsequent day, it just went downhill, and I was pretty frustrated for a while.

What would you consider to be the key to becoming a good assistant, and eventually, a good freelance engineer like yourself? What kind of an intern can one make if they can't drive, and therefore can't run aeronds outside of a given area? Thanks in advance.

Well, if you don't have a car, you're kinda SOL ... especially in L.A.

Re: the car, move to Manhattan. It's truly one of the few cities where you can get an internship/assistant position without a car. Save up for a car and move to L.A. Better weather . . . .

As far as being a good assistant, keep quiet and keep your eyes open. Stay two steps ahead of the engineer, producer and artist. No where the best food is, where the best strip club is, good hotels, etc. In other words, if you can be a great concierge while still taking care of the actual session you're on the right path. And be nice, no matter how tired you are.

Yup. When I was a studio monkey, knowing the best sushi place or where to get things like mando picks, lava lites and wind chimes or, uh, party favors in the area was the key to most of the job.
Especially early on, when it was a front desk monkey position.

Have fun, keep your ears open and your mouth shut.

As for recalls, lotsa notes and a digital camera.

Peace,

I can't recall.... (joke, yet true).

I tell people to redo the mix from scratch each time. OPtherwise they THINK they can have it "the same" and re-do just one little thing. No way. Very unlikely.

However, one of the things I say is: "There is a 50% chance it will get better and a 50% chance it will get worse if we do it again.... their choice at that point to proceed or not.

Often times, the mere fact that you are dissatisfied with a miz leads you to what will make the second approach better.
