It would be interesting (I've been thinking!) to hear what you all think was your best work?
WHY is it something important to you? What did it teach you about your best features/attributes? The success of it may or may not matter to you (much of my best never even saw the light of day, but it's good, objectively).

My best work is hopefully the next one.
Yes, the good shit doesn't usually get "put out."
Why is that?

Same here...
I think my own stuff...that I am working on now...will end up being my best work.
It's slow going right now...too many other things in the fire...but it's moving forward little by little.
Of course...I'm not in any rush...I have no deadline for this project... ..which is good, because I can think about what I am doing before actually doing it, and then give it what it needs until I'm happy with it.

Some of my best work also has never been released, due to factors beyond my control. It's usually my worst work that I spend time thinking about, and trying to avoid those same mistakes.

Many times, personal politics OR "lack of mainstream orientation" (which can make a track great) stop the release of things. I usually run into the politics end.
Best thing I've done, likely, is mix a Faces track (unreleased) called "Behind the Sun". Great song, great band, and a challenge to mix. For some reason, it is very satisfying. Other things have done much better and gotten fair praise, but I like that one.
Oh, but I forgot the thing where....

It's interesting to evaulate - how much of the "work" comes from your talent, and how much is capturing what's great about the artist. Sometimes, a "worse" sound really shines out the energy and vibe from the performer.
"Twist and Shout" by the Beatles - not a "Hifi recording" sound, but it GETS the message across perfectly.

I think most people...when talking about their "best work"...are making that assesment based on the "whole package"...the songs, the quality of recording, the "vibe"...etc.
At least...that's where my perspective comes from...looking at the "big picture", rather than zooming in on just how well individual elements came through.

My own best work engineering-wise is when I recorded an acoustic guitar/female vocalist duo. I relly like the sound I got from that, but the performances weren't all that good. Quite a lot of mistakes. Of course, it haven't been published, except one of the songs on the school CD where we were studying at the time. I would love to record another session with the musicians after they would've rehearsed more, (their live performances were really good, so I know they could pull it off) but since the singer lives in Stockholm (Sweden) it's kind of difficult..
One production that's probably the best work I've been a part of (assistant engineer) was a CD for children. The music/arrangements were really good, with a lot of diffent styles of music, from latin, samba, jazz, swedish singer-songwriter style, and more.. A bit of everything. The tracks sounded very good, but I haven't heard the finished CD yet. I'm not sure if it's even out yet.

My favorite stuff is more of a collaboration than simply engineering.... The stuff I did with Tom Waits (on "the book of Knots" record coming out soon) and the stuff I did with Elvis Costello are both really fun to listen to.
I really like the Dub Trio record I did, and for heavy stoner rock stuff, I like the new Dixie Witch record, and UNSANE's record "blood run" which I produced and engineered.
Some of my favorite stuff is on the first "book of knots" record. Available from arclight records (www.arclightrecords.com) because it is really vibey, without worrying so much about "proper engineering" and accepting the limitations of a few mics on the kit for some of the songs.... less than ideal placement.... blah blah... making in work during the mix was challenging, and fun, and the end result is SUPER moody because of it....

Joel, how was it working with Tom Waits? Were you doing any strange & unorthodox stuff you'd like to share?

Joel, which Costello stuff did you do? He is the alpha and omega for me.

I have collaborated with Elvis and Tom, as a musicia/producer/engineer, rather than just "recording their record" type of dealie.
I just did a song with Elvis that was for the show "house" and people are freaking out about it. It is that song "beautiful" by linda perry (made famous by christina aguilera) and we did it up at Avatar, in the "A" room. Totally fun.
People have been tying to figue out where to get it... I dunno. It was just me and him. We were the band. I guess it will come out on something, because people are hammering the interweb looking for it..... It aired this past week so i can finally talk about it....
