I read the article today and am continuing to read the rest of the magazine. Nice going! Unfortunatly, descriptions of cool mics make me start to salivate in public.
There was another review by someone else in the issue who described a mic's character as "chewy". hmmmmm, that's new.

sonic bukkake....haha....yeah. well we're going to change the name of the mag TO that, in actual fact. except in japan where it'll be called um.....nevermind.
but yeah, Phil O'Keefe's piece on Tranzport is going to be in our Halloween issue...so cool on y'all that've been waiting....
appreciate the "going in the right direction" comments....we've been working on this, so it's cool that this's been noticed.
That being said though: that Mic issue almost killed us.
and having to send email after email to smooth hurt feelings is almost killing us now.
but so it goes....

More blow by blow accounts of actual sessions (techniques/gear/etc).
More hardware, less software.
More gear shootouts in the style that J.J. used for the U47'alikes article.
Smaller pics of the engineers, and bigger shots of their equipment/rooms.
How about a big article on the history of some of the most loved analog consoles of past (Neve/API/Trident/Helios)?
The last issue (mic issue) and the Brian Wilson "Smile" issue were the best I have seen in a long time. I hope you guys continue in that direction. Thanks for listening.

I've read a lot of good ideas in this thread.
- The idea of a step-to-step project with focusing on why did we do this, and do that in every step of the production. Signal chain, gear-choices, etc.. From the basics on down to tweaking. This could really open ones eyes for different problems, and how to solve them. It would be really cool if one could get a CD with some samples along the way, for example: "Track 23 is how the snare sounded with a 57 placed like this (pic 5), while track 24 is like we eventually recorded it (pic 6)".
- More on the "first steps", like mic choice, positioning, sound source positioning in the room, possible baffels, everything like that.
- Psychology. How to get most out of the artist, and yourself.
- Of course, more pages. The more pages, the better.
- There's so many home/project studios out there these days, so some focusing on cheap(ish) acousic mods and other advice would be really cool.
- Mic pre/guitar-amp/acoustic space issue is nmot a bad idea at all.
Well, for more stuff, read this thread..
The only thing I have to do now is order a subscription... No chance at getting one for free, I suppose?

I would love to see some stuff about obscura. Nobody devotes any time to unique and weirdo stuff. I LOVE that kind of thing. Shit, I will frikkin do it. Reviews of weirdo stuff and call it "junk shop" or some shit. I think everyone likes to talk about the "cool, unique thingy" in the rack, rather than 900 years more of tired ass debates over which thing sounds like a fairchild, or which new thing that looks like an old thing is actually the thing to buy next! Fuck that. Lets hear about some of the weirder stuff, from some more obscure manufatcurers. Stuff like DaviSound, or Sage electronics, hell... even cool old shit from collins/gates/ ADR/ blah blah...etc,etc... you know the stuff. If not, wouldnt you want to read about it? You may see one in a junk shop and freak out and say "thanks EQ! You actually care about recording!"
Eugene: I have already seen the improvement. Keep up the good work. I was only interested in writing for EQ because you are at the helm. I dont even write so good, hell I can barely read most days, and I certainly dont have any time for verbal sparring over BS. BUT: I think the magazine is on the incline, so you have a fan in Brooklyn......

I have always liked interviews, but usually the interviewers ask the wrong or stupid questions, or are starstruck.
How about an interview where a mix is put up and the victim and interviewer go over the mix track by track and discuss it. A link to the tracks could also be posted. That would help to solve the problem of generic answers about eq, compression, and whatever.

Tell you what... I have personally seen products at a show or read about them and then asked another magazine to let me review them.. and then they turn out to be crap. or at least to have crappy aspects. And advertisers make their displeasure MAJORLY felt to the publisher.
I think more reviews that are unafraid to criticise advertisers would be a step in the right direction for ALL audio magazines.
Also more comparisons to the originals or real thing; in the cases of reissues and emulations/clones.
I can't tell you how many times I have simply stopped reading a review that begins essentially "well, I've never used a REAL U-47 but..."
