I have a guy recording here who told me about going to a garage sale, where he bought a Fairchild 660, a Neumann U47, an RCA BK11 and several other choice pieces of gear for $25 each! (The funny thing was that the seller had a Rhodes that he wanted $300 for.)

I thought that would be a cool thread. I'll tell you some of my favorite deals: I got 14 vintage Langevin AM16s for $400. I got a 1963 Gibson Reverse Firebird VII (only 301 made) for $1,280. I got a 1958 Hofner Beatle bass for $400. I got my Micro Moog for $150. The list goes on...

I'm sure BK has some good ones. He has the stupidest keyboard collection ever.

Yamaha KX-1 for $100.00

6 Alesis ModFX for $10.00 each brand new

6 Universal Sound Bank Plug in synths for 9.00 each

Triton Pro X with every option imaginable for $2500.00 new (well it was used at a clinic).

But my best deal? All of my studio furniture (1 desk and 4 racks - PIC -) for free. The guy's buddy brought them to my house, and he was supposed to pick up the payment the next day. Never showed, phone number was disconnected. My guess is that it was some sort of scam in the making to get my gear or case the joint, but somehow it went wrong. I contacted to police to see if the racks had been reported stolen, but there were no replies. Ah, well.

Now THAT'S a hot deal.

I got a couple.... a Telefunken LD condenser and power supply (I'm betting of Schoeps manufacture...), given to me by a guy who doesn't use it... he'll give me the matching brother when he finds it.

An RCA 77D, 'loaned' to me by a guy who doesn't use it. Cost me under $300 to have restored.

An RCA PB90, again, given to me by a guy who doesn't use it. He rescued it from a theater booth, where it was scheduled to be thrown away. Also cost under $300 to get restored.

Three different (but very nice...) guys.

Phillip, I hate you. So those didn't belong to Scott Vance I take it?

Oh, I forgot ... if we are talking permanent loaning, my Camco kit and Mellotron 400.

Wish I had one of those "got it at a yard sale for $10" stories!

I've managed to find a few nice pieces for low prices.
Just a couple of months ago I bought a Hammond L103 for $200. Yeah, you can find them on eBay for a few hundred, but then it always ends up being in Wisconsin or the other side of the country...and the shipping costs kill the sweetness of the deal. I found mine on a local BB...had it loaded and on the way to my studio the following day.
It's already found it's way on a few tunes I'm working on.

Also, about 3 years ago...I picked up a bunch of the Alesis-GT mics, when the two companies parted ways. I got all of the mics at less than 1/3 street price.
I have (4) AM52, (2) AM62 and (2) AM40..and I use them quit a lot...very happy with them.

And over the last few years...I've managed to score a bunch of other stuff on eBay...but you have to constantly keep scanning the listings...waiting for that "jewel" to pop up, and then grabbin' it before too many other people find out.
Over the last few weeks, I've bought 12 Zildjian cymbals for about 1/3 their normal price…and they are all mint!

Wow ! I don't have anything close to those amazing deals. A Fairchild, Neumann's, SM7's at yard sales ? Phew ! That is some kind 'a luck.

Closest thing was a Lexicon MPX1 for $300 bucks from a studio bankruptcy ad in Pro Audio Marketplace. There were at least a couple for sale. I only got 1 though (which I'm now selling.....not in a yardsale though.....Doh!).

Ex roommate owed me $150 for rent... He gave me his Dad's old Hagstrom guitar in place of the cash. In less than 5 minutes I walked across the street and traded it to my neighbor (a Hagstrom collector) for this 1971 Tobacco sunburst Les Paul by far my best deal ever...

From my post on the SSS archives:

Quote:
Early Sunday morning, my girlfriend and I were out walking her dog. She lives on Sunset Boulevard in the Pacific Palisades, a wealthy neighborhood of Los Angeles between Santa Monica and Malibu (she lives in the cheapest apartment in the Palisades, so don't get the wrong idea...).

I saw some stuff on someone's lawn and said "Hey look, a garage sale." Sales are pretty rare in this upscale neighborhood. We went over, there were a few people looking at stuff. I saw a little guitar in a case, and then I looked on a table and saw an MXL Recording Pak (with the West LA Musin $199 sticker still on the box) - a set of one MXL 2001 LD condenser mic and one MXL 603S SD condenser. It looked like neither mic had been used, or even out of the box. I thought for 1/10th of a second, picked it up, pulled out a $20, and said to the woman sitting there "twenty bucks?" She said "sure, twenty bucks".

I asked if she had any more stuff like this, she said she had a MOTU but could never get it to work on her computer. I asked her if it was a PC, she said yes, and I said I'd be glad to help her get it to work but MOTU at least in the past worked a lot better on Macs. My girlfriend whispered that the clothes for sale weren't very good but she was tempted to buy a vase. I asked the woman how much for the bike, because mine had been stolen, and she said it wasn't for sale.

We thanked her, went on with our walk, and my girlfriend said "I wonder why Rikki Lee Jones is having a garage sale. I didn't know she lived in my neighborhood." It hadn't struck me, but of course it was Rikki Lee Jones, living a half block from my girlfriend.

Now I wonder what was in the guitar case.
Yeah, they weren't ELAM251s...

I bought some top notch Zildjan and UFIP cymbals off a lawyer for dirt cheap. The guy bought this amazing drum kit, then later learned that he couldn't play to save his life.

I bought a pair of AKG C535s of a church for $20. I know a lot of people don't care for them, but I found them very useful for many years. I also a few 58s and a 57 for like $10 ea.

I got a brand new (full warranty) Ensoniq DP/2 fx unit for less than half price. Nobody knew what the thing was so it never sold. Has some great sounds in there. Apparently designed by the Lexicon guys...

I bought a Hughes and Kettner TriAmp (original version) - first in Western Canada for $2400. Shortly after I bought it the price jumped up to ~$4000.

I suppose the 1952 Tele I bought on Sunset Blvd in a guitar shop for $1100 is my favorite. I have to say that I am half-lucky and half-"doggedly energetic" in finding good deals.

1870's Martin acoustic $5
Mellotron 400 $1100
Con Brio ADS 200 (look it up...) $Free
3M M79 24 track $1000
1954 Les Paul Standard $2500

Always looking. I just bought a 60's Gretsch 20" kick for $125 yesterday. Rarely buy anything now. Never found a good mic for cheap, need one. ALMOST traded a cheap MIDI module for a HUGE Buchla modular synth once... close!

Ok, I've got a couple.
About a year ago an Apogee ad8000 with 8 channel DA, Protools and TDIF ambus cards for $1200.00. two channels were broke (as disclosed by the seller) but apogee went through the whole thing and whipped it into shape for a $200.00

The other and best one, a matched pair of KM184's from an albuquerque pawn shop for $700.00.

I've bought 100s of vintage guitar effects for 5 and ten bucks. I just sold a Foxx foot phaser in the high three figures that i bought for 5 dollars with about 15 other "junk" pedals in the "rack era" 80s. Now if i could just afford to keep them running.

My 33115 pair cost me a few hours work. MMMMM. Am i crazy for liking them more than 1073s?

I found an ad in a radio trade paper from someone selling Pultec EQP-1A3s. They wanted $75 each for the three of them. How could I pass them up? This was 1993.

Nine UERI 1176's for 1200.00 and then I sold 2 of them on ebay back in 2000 for $3200.00. So with that math I paid -($2000.00) for 7 - 1176's

In 1965 I bought a goldtop les paul (soapbars) from Bobby Cochran (Eddie's nephew, and great player btw) for $75.00.

Unfortunately I was stupid enough to trade it to Jerry Garcia for a Dual Showman in 1966.

I will NEVER forget how really stupid I can be...!

Is that the goldtop that Jerry played at the Filmore shows in 1971, after he stopped playing the black custom with Alnicos?

The guy who bought the Fairchild for $25 was telling me how he passed on a Doug Irwin for $800 that was supposed to have some type Garcia ownership at one time, sometime before Jerry died. I know this chick in Houston whose dad is a gazillionaire. He bought one of Jerry's guitars (I think it was the Tiger) for $1.5 million. My friend was so depressed when I told him that.
