I've been looking at stereo mic lately and while I'm familar with several models, I'm finding that there are a lot more out there that I've never used. I mostly have relied on using two mono mics to get the job done. Any favorite stereo mics and why?

My #1 "reach for" stereo mic is the Royer SF-12, for the simple reason that it's a no-brainer to set up, and it sounds great. It's a Blumlein configuration, but with a 2' x 2' piece of 705 set up a few inches behind it, it can be XY or (if you rotate it 45 degrees) even an M/S. The only other "pro" stereo mic I have is a very recently acquired AKG C426B, which has 2 9 pattern LDC capsules (remotely controlled) which can be rotated relative to each other, for a myriad of possibilities. Since I haven't had it long, I really haven't put it through its paces, though it has served creditably as a room mic for chamber quintet, and on piano. It definitely shares a "family resemblance" with the 414, though I think it sounds a bit better on most sources.

I love my SM-2. It does about everything well except for really loud steady state stuff.

I had a hand in the design of the Schitt Stereo Mic, so I am biased (pun!) but it is unique....

Yeah, the SM2 is one I'm leaning toward. The only stereo mic I've really used in the past was a C24, but I can't afford to buy one. Plus they aren't easy to come by. I like JJ's SM69 a lot too, which I got to try on a few sessions. The Schitt is interesting looking design. How do they sound Brian?

I bought an old AKG C422 at an auction over a year ago and I must say I have got alot of use out of it. Similar in shape to the C426B and a C24 with a more bulbous head.....(That sounded funny). It has 2 C12 capsules with 90 degree rotating heads stacked on top of each other. It really sounds fantastic! And at $875 it was a deal of the century to me. I have the Rode NT-4 which also sounds pretty decent for certain things.

Im curious.
Is modern capsule geometry design guided much by computer analysis or is it primarily an empirical hunt and peck subjective optimization that goes on?
Talk about alchemy.
This reminds me of the incomprehensible/un-modelable effect that the specific shape of the distilling vessel is reported to make in the taste of Scotch. (Highland Park is the best IMHO)

I had a Neumann U69i for a while, used it for OH, room mic and for capturing "reamped" ambience (I'd play back program material into various spaces in my old place, track it and blend with the dry tracks in lieu of using outboard or software reverbs). Had a U87 vibe to it, but nothing very exciting so I sold it to a co-worker. It was cool that I could independently change the capsule patterns and relationship of the capsules to affect the stereo image.
