i know two guys that both bought the cardinal, and they are really disappointed. it looks like it should be really really great, but in reality it's a poorly made 200 dollar condenser mic with a cool finish. its been reported that they don't shine on anything, vocals or instruments, and there's always a better mic for any application for like 50 dollars more.

Looking for a cheap and great sounding SDC, check out the Samson ones. I used them on violins recently for a live show July 4th, and was stunned at their fidelity.
And they are as I recall being told, under $100.

When I first saw the Cardinal, I thought it might make a really cool looking talkback mic. It looks absolutely beautiful in person. I still have not heard one in action, so I can't confirm or deny your friend's opinions Sean.

i just saw a banner ad for these mics. I was thinking these were new.. guess not
i think they would be great for PA installments...
for a presentation mic this would look cooler then the typical 58...
Every non musician friend i bring to my studio i can almost guarantee that they will pick up my beta 52 and say WOW i want to speak into this one... something cool about bullet type mics...

What about the raven. I thought I heard somewhere they were goon on toms. I'd really like to get some good tom mics that don't cost as much as 421's. Any suggestions if not the Raven?

The 604's aren't bad, but their clip/tom clamp is terrible. I've never been able to get the mic even remotely close to where I wanted it with that mount.
For $99 the Sennheiser e609 silver series is an incredible tom mic, and it is also incredible on electric guitar and bass, as well as sax and trumpet. IMHO about the best under $100 investment you can make. I use them all the time in the studio and live on toms, and get great results.

That's what I love about the e609's they are super easy to place. the XLR comes out the back, under the mic, and the supercardiod pattern allows you to place them back without bleed.
Street price, $99.
And they sound killer, without the artifical hyped bottom exhibited by many of the newer low profile tom mics.
