Driving and walking around Caribou Ranch, not being able to find the spot where the studio once stood.
That a studio with such a rich history should meet the fate it did, and so little info and history on it. No pictures, either.
That albums that were so influential on my musical life were recorded there, and it is all but wisps in the wind.
dammit.

Ironic you should post this. A buddy of mine just got back from a vacation to New York. One of his tour stops was to "The Hit Factory" . He said it is, "...No more. Going Condo."
Dang...

Last year, I took a walk through the building that used to house one of my old studios... it was a really nice place at one time... now it's a gym. Now THAT was a strange (and somewhat depressing) feeling.
OTOH, I like my current place better anyway.
But it still sucks to see some of these beautiful and historic rooms going the way of the dodo.

I've yet to get any clear story on what happened to the place. All I've heard--with any consistency--is arson.
bpark, if I can ask...how do you mean "lost"?

One of the problems I heard that had there, once the initial hoopla wore off, was that singers had a terrible time performing there due to the altitude and low humidity. Can anyone confirm that?

I never visited Caribou Bill, but I've spent a lot of time up in the mountains over the years... once you get above 8K feet, you definitely tend to notice the effects of elevation and breathing is tougher, and endurance isn't as good... unless you've got really good lungs and are acclimated to that sort of environment. And yes, it tends to be pretty dry air too.
I don't think you can do much about the relative lack of O2, but a good humidifier would probably help singers somewhat. But if you had a part where someone needed to do long, sustained notes for BGV parts or whatever, I wouldn't want to head up to the mountains to do it. Or at least not at the 8-10K foot level.
So while I can't confirm, from direct reports of anyone who actually recorded in that particular studio, my personal experiences at high elevations would tend to confirm what you're saying.

They probably won't pass out, but they might experience some shortness of breath compared to what they would experience at a lower elevation. I'm sure you've noticed it by now... try running a few miles down the shoreline of Big Bear Lake, and then run the same distance the next time you're down the hill... you'll notice a difference.
I dunno... I've never been particularly picky, and I'm hardly a world class singer, but IMO, the views, crisp, fresh air and general vibe would probably go a long way towards my attitude being better up there (and I've spent a lot of time up there), and that might somewhat compensate for the thinner atmosphere... the humidity you can deal with / control fairly easily.
And that O2 bottle might not be a bad idea. Put in an oxygen bar and call it a "feature".

I have a blurb form my Sunday paper real estate section that says the former Shaggy Dog Recording Studios in Stockbridge Massachusetts (host to James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie, Hendrix and Odetta in its day) has been sold to a developer who is going to renovate the four buildings (on 63 acres) into condominuims.
Apparently there is no building on the planet that can't be converted to a condo.
Phil, just spend a week in the mountains to acclimate before your session. I agree, the fresh air and isolation would be a bigger plus than the occasional need to gasp.

So...anyone know any history on Caribou, it's demise, and the cirumstances surrounding it?
I know it didn't go condo.

I have heard stories, but nothing definitive. I do know that a friend of mine has the Hammond B3 and Leslie cab that was used on an awful lot of recordings up there. I bet if you asked Mickey Houlihan over at Wind Over the Earth, he could tell you all about it.
