I realised recently my noise level when I'm not using my microphone is higher than when I just got my mixer. Is it because I haven't been treating my small crate mixer well? I left it dusty and didn't bother to cover it up when not using it.
Does dust cause mixer noise and the signal to become less clean?

Yes, dust can cause noise problems. I don't know for certain that this is the reason for the increased noise you've been noticing, but it is certainly a possibility.

You can take a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment and carefully suck the dust off of it (be careful not to suck up any knobs), or maybe better yet, use a can of compressed air to remove surface dust from the unit.

Chances are, the problems are internal - dust gets into the sliders, pots and switches. Sometimes this will result in crackling sounds when you manipulate a particular control. There are products that can be purchased (Caig DeOxIt) that can clean pots, faders and switches, as well as electrical contacts (input jacks can also get dirty and cause intermittent contact and noise issues) and jacks... but if it is REALLY bad, and you're not sure what you're doing, you might want to consider taking it to a repair or service center and having them give it a full cleaning.

A non-permeable cover (plastic or similar) placed over your mixer when not in use can help reduce the amount of dust that gets into it, as well as regular surface cleaning with a vac or compressed air.

It's a cheap mixer. I was thinking of upgrading to a Yamaha 10/2 mixer should this one die on me..
Thanks for replying!
