Hey guys, Maybe you can give me some of your opinions here,
With a current spending budget of 2000.00 for a mic pre and DI, should I get the Avalon Vt-737 and use it for tube mic pre and DI all in one unit for about 2000.00 or should I get the Avalon U5 for DI which would leave me with about 1460.00 for a different mic pre?
Any suggestions would be welcomed. Doesn't have to be Avalon but I sort of fell in love with them during a demo.

It's pretty widely accepted that the 737's aren't good enough for what they cost.
Check this out! http://www.sebatron.com/products/thorax.htm This is what I'm lusting after!

While I like the Avalon stuff, I also feel it is way overpriced.

the vt737sp is a great bass di. however, no bass di should cost 2000 dollars. its a very metallic sounding preamp, and no matter how hard i try i can't get it to be friendly with vocals. at least not my voice. 2000 dollars can get you a Universal Audio LA-610 channel strip and a Groove Tubes The Brick and then you can have like 300 dollars to spend on beer.

Prices are so whacked up here in OZ. A 737 would set me back around A$3600 (about US$2600), whereas I can get a Sebatron Thorax for around A$2k (about US$1500). The LA-610 is A$2800 (about US$2k) and I've heard too many negitive reports about it.
It really is a no brainer here.

The Trident 4T Celebration strip offer a great sounding pre and di, along with eq and compression. adds a bit of brit color, otherwise a very solid contender at $999.99.

Funkwave, DI's - just like mic pres - can sound very different. So it's more about the kind of sound you want. Which would be...?

I bought my Great river 1NV to use as a pre-amp on vocals. I had been recording a Fender Jazz thru a sans amp ( I have both the PSA-1 rack mount and the bass DI pedal unit).
However, once I plugged the bass into the DI input of the GR1NV I have not gone back to either of the sansamps for bass. The sound is just rounder, clearer, better through the GR1NV. I hit it with just a little RNC compression going in. I add just a touch of chorus (in the mid-range only) to give the plugged-in sound some dimension in the mix.
