Hi all. . . (by the way, for what it is worth, I call you guys "Philco". . .)

Before I place my order for a matched pair small diameter condenser mics (which are probably non-returnable), I thought I seek thy expertise one last time.

Here it is. . . the three final contenders literally culled from a "cast of thousands":

1. Schoeps CMC6 with MK4 (regular cardioid) capsules

2. Gefell M300

3. Gefell M200 (with M20 cardioid)

Here are the approximate prices (for two. . . new):

1. Schoeps: $2700 (true matched-pair)

2. Gefell M300: $1500 ($1300 if I go B-stock) (true matched-pair)

3. Gefell M200: $2400 (apparently there is no true matched pair set)

It seems to me (from what I have learned here and elsewhere) is that the "premium" mic is the Schoeps, but that the Gefells also get a lot of respect. Only the M300s come with a fancy schmancy bar for X-Y and ORTF mounting.

My purposes, again, are primarily acoustic guitar with some piano and, possibly the taping of choirs, chamber orchestras, etc.

The Gefell 200 series has replaceable capsules like the Schoeps CMC6, while the M300 is fixed. I will probably either buy a set of omnis (DPA 4006s?) or omni capsules for the 200s or the Schoeps. I think that it would be quite unlikely that I would need both the omnis and the cardioids at the same time.

For additional reference, I have the following mics in the (currently very small) mic cabinet: Manley Gold Reference (mono); Soundelux ifet7; Shure KSM32; Shure SM81 (2); Shure SM57.

Money is, of course, an issue, and all other things equal, I'd love to save some, but sound quality is my primary objective with this purchase.

Sorry to be such a pest, but you guys really are the experts. I'm just the hack. An educated hack. . . but a hack in this game, anyway. :-)

Like I said. . . a set of these mics will be placed this week. I just don't want to make a mistake.

So, as they say in the movies: "This is your last chance. . . "

;-)

What shall it be, gentlemen? Door #1? Door #2? Or Door #3?

Thanks very much.

Steve

Steve,

I'd place them in this order: 1, 3, 2, and buy the highest one that's within your budget. You've put together a really great list to choose from, and any engineer would feel totally comfortable using any of those choices in even the most critical applications.

Cheers,
chris

I'd buy them from a place that will allow me to return them if I am not happy.

Tell the dealer that the mics are for use ONLY on acoustic piano and acoustic guitar and MAKE CERTAIN they will allow you to exchange for a different model if you're not 100% satisfied. Some dealers will not take returns on mics due to "health laws". But I see no reason why that shoyuld apply to something you're not going to be singing into.

BTW, the "fancy schmancy bar" is something you can pick up seperately for use with any of the mics for only a few bucks. Ask for a "stereo bar". \:\)

FWIW, I'd probably go with the M200's for the best balance of price / performance, and the interchangeable capsule capabilities.

Thanks for all of your help. . .

The final decision was to buy a matched pair of the Schoeps CMC6 bodies with the MK4 cardioid capsules. They will arrive tomorrow.

The press on these mics is pretty universally wonderful, and the ability to buy new capsules and a 222 tube body to use the current capsules made a lot of sense.

I hope they sound as good as advertised.

This completes my microphonic orgy. . . I shall not be asking anymore microphone questions (except, perhaps, which end to hook the cables up to! :-) for quite some time.

Thanks for all the help!

Yeah, but you WILL let us know how you like them, won't you Steve? ;\)

Seriously - congrats on the very very nice mics. Please do let us know what you think of them, and if you have any mic technique questions. \:\)

Oh, well, I'll be happy to provide input. . . but just remember that classic computer mantra: GIGO. . .

My wallet is thicker than my talents, Phil. . . but I'll at least never be able to blame my lousy productions on a lack of good microphones, huh?

:-)

Seriously. . . thanks very much for all the advice. . . I'll report in soon. . .

The Schoeps have arrived! First impression: If mics were sold on the basis of weight, then the Shure SM81 would cost 3 times what a Schoeps CMC6/MK4 does.

Second impression: The more one spends on a microphone, the smaller the owner's manual.

Sound tests to follow.
