Here we go again with terrible spending habits.

I finally REALLY looked into the Peluso condensers. For those uninformed, go to http://pelusomicrophonelab.com/ and see what you think. Do I need more microphones? No, not really. Do I want the 251 and the U47LE? You're damn right I do. They cost almost 2 grand less than the Lawsons, which I was inches away from buying a couple of days ago.

Anyone actually used these? I'd love to hear something recorded or even just some thoughts. Because I need more silver mics.

In my experience, the really class products are usually reped by familiar high end dealers.

We all have to work within our particular budgets, and adjust our expectations accordingly.

I would suggest that, if the budget supports $NNNNN for microphones, buying 1 top notch mic will be more satisfying ear candy than 2 or 3 lower-tier mics.

I know that you have been looking hard and trying to make good decisions. As I assembled my mic cabinet I did the same, and I can only say that, from my experience, when I made the leap from 414s and Neumann 89s to Korbys, Coles, and old RCA ribbons, the 414s and the 89s are getting dusty. When I moved from AKG 451s to Neumann 84s and 83s and AKG C-28s, the 451s are getting dusty and the Oktavas went away.

Lawsons, Korbys, Telefunken and all the other boutique manufacturers are able to command the dollars that they get because the results are that much better than the competition. They are carried by the high-end reps because GCs can't afford them, or because these companies carefully build and test each mic, so their output is too low for widespread distribution in large numbers. That hand work and the relative rarity of these products is reflected in the price.

I don't own any Peluso mics and I have never knowingly used one. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about them that I can recall at this moment. I have also never heard anyone try to compare them in any way to a Lawson or Korby or any other top tier mic manufacturer's product.

Peluso condensers have been discussed a time or three here on the PS forum. You might want to do a search. \:\)

While the price looks good, I have no idea what they actually sound like, so I can't comment about that, but IIRC, a couple of other people have heard them and apparently liked them. I have no idea if they did any side by side comparisons between them and the vintage mics (or modern reproductions such as a Lawson, Soundelux or Korby).

Best bang for the buck? IMHO Peluso CEMC-6. They sound great. For the price nothing comes close. I'm reviewing them in an upcoming Tape Op

The best deal on the market in SDC's right now, IMO, are the Peluso pencil mics. And I agree with Henry that there's really nothing close to them for the price. And you can score some pretty primo Peluso shockmounts for around $45 a pop.

My 2¢.

I'll third the Peluso's. I got the whole kit and kabootle for $1350. That's two CEMC-6's with all the different capsules offered and flight case, two shockmounts. Yummy! Rob My Songs

I'm also taking a hard look at the Peluso mics but there is no distribution up here in Canada so I'd have to buy before I try. Hmmm......a bit risky.

I recently did several vocal sessions with a singer. First day we used a Telefunken USA 251. The next we used the Peluso 22 47 long body. All present preferred the sound of the Peluso, so we stuck with that for the rest of the sessons. Granted a 251 copy is not a 47 copy. Take it for what it's worth.

Nobody can tell you what your ears should know for themselves. You have to either try before you buy or jump right in. I know. I know. It's tough. And MP3s don't tell the story either. Good luck!

Thanks Henry.
It can be a really tough choice when you can only choose one. $$$.

Peluso, Gefell, Lawson, Langevin and, dare I say it, the SE mics, etc.....

I have to say, in spite of a lot of opinions out there, that I love my TLM103 and it was a clear winner over the AKG, CAD, AT, etc....mics that I tried at the time in that price range. I'd love to keep it and have something in the Tube category that compliments it or sell and have something that is clearly head and shoulders above it. A real step-up not sideways.
