So, I've asked for people to share about their free plugins, but I haven't used one before. How about a quick lesson someone (so I don't have to buy another book that I can't really afford right now). I'm using Sonar 4 PE and a Tascam FW-1884, what do I need to make the plugins work for me and how do I actually use them?

Thanks for dealing with my ignorance on this one.

There a simple explanation on how to insert and use plugins in the Sonar manual and the help file.Start with that and ask for help on specific problems if you have any.

To get the best bang-for-the-buck from your post maybe you could start by describing what you're doing and what you know how to do...you've got 100 posts already or therabouts so sorry if you've already explained.

In other words you might have worked with analog mixers and outboard equipment before and have recorded tracks, mixed them, set up inserts and EQs & compressors and finalized your mixes. And you're new to the world of the DAW and don't know how to wrap a VST plugin, or don't know how to insert it into Sonar (I have that one too!) or don't know how to use the plugins....Do you have some tracks you've recorded and want to tweak them in a DAW or are you learning plugins before you record anything? Just curious... \:\)

I'm experienced in the analog recording world, but fairly new to the DAW world. I've been recording already and have just been using the efx and "plugins" that came with sonar. I just need to know how to make the plugins function in my DAW, I understand the principles of using them to modify sounds just fine. Thanks for asking.

In SONAR, there's a little bin to the right and below the track name in the track view. Right-click in there and select Audio Effects. Start with the Sonitus series and use what you need. Stack effects in that bin as well. Order is important, just like in the analog world you choose whether you put an effect before or after by dragging that effect to where you want it. Refer to the SONAR manual and you'll be fine. Good luck.

Thanks Matt, but I guess I wasn't clear on my question. What I wanted to know was how to get new plug-ins to work with my Sonar. I've figured that out though for VST plug-ins. Haven't got any Direct-X one's yet. How about loading those? Is it different? Matt... do you know?

I don't know Sonar, but I think Craig wrote a book about Sonar. Regardless, see what your manual or Help Menu says.

Chances are it's something like this:

Find where the insert point is on the multi-track window or editing window (I don't know what they're called in Sonar - never used it before). Click on that. A pull-down menu should appear with different names of plug-ins. Choose one. Twiddle. Whee.

The direct X and VST are loaded the same way.

UGh!!! Now I've downloaded a bunch of them. The Cakewalk VST thingy shows all of them loaded and ready, but in Sonar, only about half of them are accessible.

Why is this? Is there a limit on the number I can have?

This might have something to do with your problem - - Sonar is smart enough that it will not allow you to use a mono plug on a stereo source, or vice versa. So it will disable those plugs that won't work for the current source.

It is also smart enough to compensate for plugin latency (the additional delay added to the signal path due to the plugin processing taking place). If, for some reason, Sonar can't determine what the latency is, it may disable that plugin.

I don't know Sonar, I use Cubase, but it should have a folder where plugins have to stay to be found...right? I don't really know if this was the problem, but you never know...
