Why don't we all share about whatever free plug-ins we know about by posting here!
Give the link if possible for downloading it and some feedback on it if you've used it. That would be awesome!
(I'd start first but I'm a new convert to computer DAWs so I don't have anything yet.)
p.s. Phil, since most of us on here use computer-based DAWs, would you consider making this a 'sticky' if there are some good response?

I just might...
Actually, we've had several discussions about various freeware and shareware VST plug ins. KVR is the big "source" to find them... but there's a lot of "less than useful" and "poorly coded" freeware stuff out there, and digging through all the stuff over on KVR in order to find the pearls is a bit of a daunting task, so you might want to do a search of the forum here and use "free VST plug" as the search terms (without the "quotes")... I'm sure you'll find a lot of good suggestions.

there are some great ones. basically the companies that have freebies to attract you to the other pay plugins are safe to use... dont get trapped in the vst plugin game like i did a few years ago.. some much free crap is made with synthedit. just chessy stuff..
the classic vst's and digifish stuff is just about the only free stuff i'd want to use. But like i said the maker of the free classic vst's makes a "golden" line my fav vst's.. and the digital fish guy makes plugs for samplitude now..

Thanks for thinking about it phil...and the pointers. Wow, I never realized there was a search feature on this board. How dumb of me.

No problemo... a lot of people overlook the search feature, but it really can be a handy resource.
Make sure you D/L the Fish Fillets package first... The Blockfish compressor is pretty darned cool, and the fact that it's free is just a bonus.
You can get \'em here.

Eric... that's a good point about what you said. I could definitely see how you could get trapped in a problem like that. Thanks for the warning.
On another note... while we wait for others to share their free plug-in links...
What is your most useful plug-in (or bundle if that plug-in is ONLY available in a bundle)? That is, which one really makes the sonic difference that just can't be beat - that you just can't live without, and probably use in in every track at some point (or every project anyway)?
Next question: Is there really that much of a difference between one company's and another's flanger/phaser/delay/chorus or any other basic effect like that? Is there... really?

The Simulanalog Guitar Suite (along with the Digitalfishphones and Kjer... Classic series).
If you want a synth VSTi, Crystal from Greenoak is competitive with some of the expensive VSTi synths.

Simulanalog is free? (I'm at work and followed the link to find it was a zipped download.)
So that it is clear, I'm primarily asking about effects as for plugins, but synths are cool too. I haven't used any yet, but I might sometime.

Frohmage is free (Mac, RTAS). Great filters. I don't know the URL.

Thanks! I posted that earlier today - my last day at work for two months! - and didn't have enough time to go and find it. What a great plug-in!! I'm using it more and more. Very creative uses in all sorts of applications, even using it to filter the reverb returns. Wowwww!!!!

And yes, Simulanalog is free.
PSP offers Pianoverb and Vintage Meter for free.

I have Sonar4 too - the VST Adapter wrapper has to be pointed to the VST plugin folders...crack that Sonar4 manual and you'll see what I mean - also you can do some reading of posts over at the Cakewalk Sonar forum - every question you could ever invent has been asked over there - good luck!

Frohmage is pretty cool, but weird. I couldn't find any documentation on it so I'm a bit lost as to exaclty what each control does. I suppose that's not too big of a deal though... I'll just have to use my ears unless someone can point me in the right direction.

Generally when I break in a new plugin I'll put an instance of Voxengo SPAN after it so I can see how a knob affts certain frequency ranges. If it's the kind of knob that is more subtle or affects phasing then I have to rely on my monitoring to reproduce it so I can hear it.
What are you listening on? Can you hear subtle stuff?

The blue bar near the top of the screen has links on it... click on the Instruments and Effects links for a list of available stuff. Some are demos of commercial and shareware instruments and effects plug ins, but there's a lot of freebie stuff there too.

Also, the blue bar on the left side of the screen has links on it... click on the one that says "Instruments / effects / hosts".

I DL it earlier (I posted over on Craigs forum too) and it works nice as VST in Tracktion(T2), but I cannot get it to work as RTAS in PT. The window is kinda small, but other than that is seems kewl.

Kewl Where... glad it's at least working in Tracktion for you. Strange about the RTAS version... on the PC, it's working fine for me in PT LE.

Hmmm...sounds good... Actually, anything that really gives my tracks a different sonic character than what they already have and ARE NOT a whacked out effect that overrides the natural sound... is what I'm looking for! Any suggestions... even not free? (Don't they make plugin version of the Empirical Labs stuff like the distressor and the Fatso (is that what its called))

I WISH!
No, while there are tape sim plug ins, there is nothing in plug in land that comes remotely close to the sound of either of those hardware units IMO.
What plug ins do you already have?

So far I only have what came with Sonar 4 (which includes a Tape Sim that sounds pretty decent on some things) and the free one's you guys have mentioned. So any suggestions as for a purchase would be great. Maybe I just haven't ever used the right verbs, delays, and such, but I really lean towards a drier sound rather than using these types of effects (although they have their time and place).
No empirical labs stuff huh...damn!
