Don't think I was really aware they existed until I brought home a trade mag (PAR) from work the other day. Flipping through the ads, I see a half-pager for Heil Sound. Seems pretty interesting...a 1.5 inch diameter diaphragm on a dynamic (!), on the PR 30.

The review said "RE-20 on voice, only better". THAT's got my interest because I love an RE-20 on voice. Around $200. Hmmmm....

word.
I like the RE-20 enough, but the very adjectives used, on the website, to describe it's sound were the ones I've been looking for for many years. Here's hoping it'll be the end of my search for a VO mic that suits me...nevermind that I have 3 414's, 3 RCA BK5B's, a Sony ECM56F, and an RCA 44dx to choose from.

You don't have an RE20 Offramp? Have you tried one for VO work?
I have not tried the Heil yet, but someone was telling me recently that they thought they were very cool... I held off on responding to this thread hoping that I would remember just who the heck it was that told me that, but I'm still drawing a blank.

I've never owned an RE20. I've used them, yes, back when I was in radio. Of course, that was, what...umm...twenty years ago, now. Sounds whack, but I always felt there was something missing from the sound of an RE20. Couldn't put my finger on it, but it was there (or, not, actually).

The RE-20 is righteous when it's right. Last night I was tracking a very stylized singer a la David Byrne or Andy Partridge with a lot of tight throat pinchy sound. He's not a great singer but for his trip, he's cool. Different.
The RE-20 through the RNP and RNC nailed it perfectly. It took the edge off his voice but has a real solidity to it. I love this mic on certain things.
And sometimes it's just... blah. It's got to fit, then it's the shit.
That's why the Heil's got my interest.

Speaking of RE20s....
I'm selling one if anyone is interested. No VO work here and I have mics I like better on kick, so it tends to sit in its box most of the time.
PM me if interested.

Bleen, make sure you post that on the "Swap meet" thread... I'm sure if the price is right, someone will grab it pretty fast.
