I built a 2 PC network, one dual xeon one athalon, to work with my DA7 desk. The xeon is the main PC running Nuendo 3 and the athalon is running GigaStudio 3 and all of my VST instruments, including my Discrete Drums Libraries. The goal was to be able to assemble performances on any of these instruments or libraries and then fly the completed performance into my Nuendo project, thus keeping the xeon "Clutter Free (kind of like building a cabinet in a workshop out back and then bring this new furniture into the house)."

But my network isn't and I don't know why.

Matching IP and Subnet mask addresses? Check.
Do the shared files have the hand symbols on the folders? Check.
Do the PC's network setups match? Check.
Are you listed as the administrator on both PC's? Check.
Can the share window of the xeon see the athalon files? Check.

I go to network places > entire network > microsoft network > shared folder group > it shows both PC's AND THAT'S AS FAR AS I CAN GO.

Whenever I select the athalon icon to access the shared files, I get a "NOT CLEARED FOR NETWORK/NETWORK PATH NOT FOUND." error message. Any ideas on how to break this impass?

Matching IP's...? As in...the same...???

Also...how are the two PC's networked/connected?

Is there a hub?

Are they both part of a Workgroup?

Keyplayer: No, similar. They're the same up to the last digit, with one ending in 01 and the other ending in 02.

Keyplayer: They're connected via the ethernet port through a simple hub. The device manager and the IPC states that all devices are working properly.

Keyplayer: Yes and, according to the Network Setup Wizard, all procedures were done correctly.

The Xeon can sees the Athalon, but not vice versa. I can get into the workgroup and see the icons for both PC's. But when I try to activate the Athalon's icon, I get that locked out error message. So far, that's the best case scenario.

Other scenarios are as follows:

I get the error message when I try to open the workgroup on the Xeon.

I can open the workgroup on the Xeon, but it's empty (NO ICONS). The Task Manager says that it's not responding.

I can get to the workgroup on the Athalon, but I can't open it.

Have you tried just using DHCP?

Router...? If you do, it will take 192.168.x.1 If you set up a PC with fixed IP, and choose 192.168.x.1, then you have a conflict. You would be better off using DHCP, as Matt just mentioned.

If you don't have a router... either address the PCs by IP address or update the LMHOSTS file to add the names.

Try this from the Run command \\PC1\Share
- Assuming the PC is named *PC1* and the shared folder is *Share*, it should either open or challenge you for a password.

The only other thing I could think of would be to check the firewall settings on your NIC properties. Make sure file & printer sharing is not blocked.

When you get to the TCP/IP Properties...
...just choose:

"Obtain an IP address automatically"

...instead of entering the IP's manually.

Yes, Windows likes DHCP. After setting up, you'll be required a restart on each. Do one, then the other, not both at once.

Uh, not to belabor the obvious, but you *did* share the folders containing the data, and set permissions for them... right?

Actually, that's a valid question. He did already say that the folders are shared, but are the permissions set to grant users FULL CONTROL?

Keyplayer, if you're using a simple switch for a hub, the answer is to switch over to DHCP.

I bet you can ping by IP address (both ways) but not by name (or at least it only works for one of them).

If so, the problem is name resolution. You can try starting the Computer Browser service on both. If that doesn't work, you may have to create an LMHOSTS file (search on support.microsoft.com on how to do this).

This should at least let you see the share names on the other machine. If you have problems opening the share, I would look at the Windows Firewall settings (XP SP2 automatically installs it and I think enables it by default). Or possibly permissioning.
