I have a FW HDD for my iBook. I just ordered a FW audio interface to go with it, and I'm wondering if there is a particular order in chaining them together that makes any difference, i.e. mac->hdd->audio, or mac->audio->hdd?

Digidesign recommends the audio interface first on the chain, followed by the HDD. The downside to that approach is that if the audio interface loses sync / connection with the computer, so does the FW HDD, so some people prefer to put the drive between the computer and the audio interface. Personally, I have multiple FW interfaces, and each device connects directly to the computer. If you have a desktop folks, I highly recommend that approach. If you are dealing with a laptop (like Christopher), I would go with whatever the audio interface's manufacturer recommends... just be aware of the issues, and know that if your interface goes down and the HDD is after it on the chain, you might lose some data on that drive.

Sorry Phil, but digidesign has always published that the drives should be placed b/w the interface and computer for the exact same reasons you mentioned when you only have one available firewire port. If you have more than one port, they recommend each peripheral be connected directly to the computer.

From the Digidesign Answerbase:
Q. Should I hook up my FireWire drives to the second FireWire port on the Digi 002?
A. No. The second FireWire port on the Digi 002 is NOT intended for external hard drives or other storage devices, as this may result in unexpected behavior. It is recommended that Digi 002 be connected as the last device in the FireWire chain, or be connected to a dedicated FireWire port.
Q. So why is there a second FireWire port on the Digi 002 and Digi 002 Rack?
A. From the Getting Started with 002 Guide: Connecting Other FireWire Devices to Digi 002 The second FireWire port on the Digi 002 unit is available for daisy-chaining FireWire devices such as digital cameras or digital video recorders. Even when it is powered off, Digi 002 supplies power from the computer through its FireWire ports, letting you recharge batteries in other FireWire devices.

Phil, the first Q/A confirms what I said. The second (although they don't make this clear in the answerbase) is specifically for devices other than firewire hard drives. They do however make this clear distinction in their pdf documentation. In all the "getting started guides" made since the introduction of their firewire interfaces, the section "connecting other firewire devices" is the second half of a larger section titled "Connecting Firewire Drives" which again confirms/repeats my prior statement.
Cheers, Chris

I've returned to Lafayette about a year ago...after deciding to go the freelance route as an M.E.
Prior to that I was in Baton Rouge working at LSU as a staff recording engineer/studio manager/mastering engineer/teacher (not always at the same time) for just under 7 years. At my busiest I was doing over 250 records a year there...
Prior to that was a short stint Boston, preceded by Lafayette. I was born in New Orleans and raised just a ferry's ride across the river in Gretna.
New Orleans is still great...and few places feel like "home" when I'm not there. Lafayette is teeming with musicians though (well, the quality of the average musician seems much higher here than N.O., and per capita percentage of musicians seems a bit higher than N.O.) and there's profound support for the arts and culture here. But, the "coonass-budget" mentality among musicians regarding the production of albums here seems to end after tracking...with no money alloted for mastering, so getting local business as a freelance M.E. has been tough. Looking into starting a new studio here, as there really is only one hi-end one about a half hour out of town...and it costs a ton (all analog...the tape costs for the synched dual studer 24's on top of the facility costs is attrocious).
Cheers, Chris
