The NT1-A is one of the better budget LD condensers IMO. A nice little mic.
The NT5's have a rep for being pretty darned bright... I have not played with them myself, so I can't confirm or deny that... I'm sure some others with more experience will chime in RSN.
Ditto that for the Marshall mics... a lot of people like them, and the '69 has gotten some good press, but again, I have not used them myself enough to give you a honest assessment.

The NT5 matched pair is actually a pretty good value if the situation is that each drum is separately mic'd. For a situation where there's only say, four mics, they might not shine and capture the whole kit accurately or desirably. There's a simple mod, supposedly, that makes them a little hotter with wider pickup, but as soon as you open the mic your warranty is down the drain.
IMHO, I wouldn't waste my time with the NT1-A. Save up some bucks and get a Studio Projects C3 or an Audio Technica AT4040. Actually, get two of them, so you can use them as drum overheads and not worry about the NT5 set.
I'm not a RODE hater. The NT4 stereo mic, the NTK tube mic, and the NT2000 are some of the most used mics in my studio (and I have a pretty damn cool mic collection). Just don't think those particular mics are all the rage, or the best choice for the green.
Do this. Good value, multiple uses: Overheads - AT4040 x 2 (Will also be great for vocals, acoustic guitars, etc) Snare - Audix I5 or a Shure Beta57A (Will also be great for guitar amps) Kick Drum - Audix D6 (Will also be great for bass amps)

The NT-4 and NT-5 are some of the worst sounding mic sI iever used. We tested both, and actually returned them and got a second set, as they were so brittle, and so lacking in low end, we figured they had to be defective, but the second set gave us the same results. I wouldn't take the gift of them.
The NTK is IMHO the best mic value under $1000, and a solid tube winer.
My go to overheads is a Shure VP-88 stereo mic, second is 414's.

We have a pair of the NT-5's and they are awesome. Not for overheads, but for capturing some foley work. We recorded some movement sounds and these picked up every nuance. I know you are talking about drums but I just wanted to say that there is a place for these mics. We use them a lot for our field recording as well.

I haven't used the NT-1A, but I have used the original NT-1. It is a great little mic, and a top contender in that price range. I've gotten great comments on vocals recorded with it.
I also own the V69ME. Again, it's fantastic for the price, and even beyond. To me, for the under $500 tube crowd, it's the NTK and the V69. I like this mic alot.
The V6 I haven't heard, but it's essentially a tube-less version of the 69 (same price, too). And, from the reviews I'm reading/hearing, it sounds very similar too. That's a good thing. Peace

We do not record acoustic drums at all. But -- use the RODE NT 3 hyper-card (about $60 used ) for acoustic instruments (strings/guitars) and the NTK tube is a wonderful mic--especially on the used market under $3-400. The AT 4033 is a great used mic in the $100+ range. The SE's are a great build/sounding mic. Watching the used market now..

I can only comment on what I have used, so I will!
The NTK is very good
The NT1s (and NT2s) are good for their price, better than most similarly priced competitors I think.

A lot of people seem to like those Shure Betas and the Audix mics for kick drums.
For inside the kick, I have the usual AKG D112 (hardly ever use it) and a MD421. Sometimes, if the song calls for it, I'll even use a 57. But I don't mic the inside of the kick very much anymore.

kick drum? audix d6.
extremely high spl capability. small and easily maneuvered. one solid piece of metal so there isn't much possibility for vibrations that commonly happen with inside mic applications. works GREAT on a bass cabinet. to me, it sounds more like a bass drum than most bass drums do.

If you can scrape up an extra $100, or if you're willing to look on Ebay for a used one, I'd highly recommend the E/V RE20 for kick duties... it works great on a variety of other things as well.

If I can't have a RE20, then the Audix D6 or a Audio Technica ATM 25 would probably be my next two choices on kick.

I've started using an NS10 driver about 18" in front of the kick, in conjunction with a D12 inside the shell, with my Little Labs IBP sorting out phase issues. Sounds lush!

I've switched from using a LD condenser out in front (about the same distance as your NS10 woofer) to using a Yamaha Subkick to agument the RE20 instead most of the time, and I really like it.

I'd like to try an RE20, but they're pretty rare second-hand in the UK, and quite expensive new (about £780, or nearly $1500). How much are they in the US? I have a friend visiting from New York soon....

Hmmm... well, next time I'm traveling somewhere in Europe or Oz, I'll forget about the traveler's cheques and just carry a bunch of RE20's with me instead.
Don't worry folks, we are getting hammered on the exchange rate going the other way...

Well, I've used those clip on C-418's a few times, and while they were not horrible, they didn't completely knock me out either. IMO, there are better tom mics out there, as well as better kick mics than the D-112, but there are people who swear by - as well as swear AT - each of those mics, so ultimately, you have to let your own ears be your guide.
