Hiya,
I've never seen EQ mag available down here off the shelf, so am considering subscribing. But what I want to know is what level of knowledge the mag is aimed at?
I know my way round the basics of Pro Tools and the bare basics of EQ. Beyond that I start to fade. Would I get value out of reading EQ or would it more be a case of slowly absorbing technical terms over a period and hoping I get it right?

Not as high-end as Mix, not low-end like Recording Magazine - it's right smack dab in the middle.

I think it would be a good "fit" for you Nursers... It's a very cool magazine, and IMO, Matt pretty much nailed it. But of course, I'm a bit biased.
Seriously, I think you'd enjoy it.

Phil, can he get some kind of trial issue or something to see if it's for him?

Well, that might be possible, but OTOH, postage costs to Oz (where Nursers lives) might prevent that from happening. I really don't know to be honest with you GG, but I bet a well phrased PM from Nurers to Craig might get him hooked up. Then again, no promises... it's not like the two forums he moderates here are all that popular or anything, so that he could expect a comp subscription or something... :p

I've really been enjoying EQ, especially as of late. It is in the middle, but really, there's a lot for almost everyone to read.

No probs, I've subscribed for a year and we'll see how it goes. I'm a Keyboard subscriber so now have two mags to look forward to reading each month
What i would be really grateful for, is if anyone could scan the article that appeared a few months back on the Tsunami song we did? Would love to see it

Sorry , but I read them all and Recording is the one I learn the most from. And I have been recording and reading these various mags for over ten years.

I have to agree with The Stranger. Recording is much more educational and in addition the reviews actually go into more depth. EQ tries to be too many things and cover too many subjects and products without having enough sustance. This isn't a criticism of the writers, who I think are first rate, but a criticism of the format. I find I can read EQ in about 30-40 minutes and be none the wiser when I finish.

Wow......I guess EQ runs the gamut then. Some say in the middle, others say on the bottom, I put them right there at the top.
To be honest, I haven't read Mix in 2 years, and Recording in I don't know how long.
I subscribe to EQ(this months was the best by far, in a little while), Keyboard, and S.O.S. I'm in it mostly for the reviews, but there is plenty recording techniques and such to learn from EQ.

I'll just say I had a subscription to EQ for a number of years in the 90s and I don't now. A friend gave me the April issue but there wasn't much in it for me except NAMM PR sheet excerpts. I'm not oriented to "personality" profiles or the personal studios of the stars (stars on either side of the glass). I also had a subscription to Recording (the former Home & Studio Recording, wasn't it?) but I dropped it because of information accuracy issues (but the frosting on the cake was hearing one of their special quarterly CD's and comparing the "reviews" of reader music with the reality of the music and realizing they had their heads, uh, where they couldn't hear properly... That was some time ago and I have no doubt that they've upgraded their writing.)
I do still subscribe to one other recording magazine (not Mix -- though, come to think of it, I subscribed to it for a couple years as well) and I find that that mag, oriented to computer home/project recording with a side of electronic music and relatively light on personality/celeb stuff, fits me a fair bit better.
But it's clear that EQ is delivering what a lot of folks like, so, it looks like they're doing their job.
Might I just add that I've always been deeply impressed by Craig and Phil's knowledge, generosity, and patience on these boards, and they're clearly an asset to any recording publication, website, etc.

What a blatant example of sucking up!
Seriously, thank you for the very kind words. Getting mentioned in the same sentence as a legend like Craig Anderton - whom I have greatly admired for years, and who has set the highest standards as both a moderator and music industry guru / journalist - is as big a complement as I could think of. I am truely humbled and honored!

In my humble opinion, anyone who judges the quality of this type of magazine based solely on the content and quality of an issue or two may be missing out on more than they realize.
I subscribe to a great many music magazines because, at least once or twice a year, each one of them has an article that makes a difference in the way I work or setup my studio. More often than that, each magazine has an informative review or two that helps me decide on my gear purchases.
As many members at SSS know, I thought Craig's article in EQ on future-proof archiving was an invaluable must read . Last year, there was a great article in Electronic Musician that showed me how to setup my OS X-based studio in a much more effective way. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that the help of one good article can be well worth the annual price of a subscription.
Best,
Geoff

The Linda Perry article was great in EQ. I usually don't go for the Profile sort of thing but this one really hit on the future for me.
Song Doctor Creative Facilitator Recording Engineer Producer Musician/Singer Opinionated Sidekick
Glen Ballard's the same deal but I've read so much about him already. Matrix?
More of this stuff, this is where our future lies.

I barely ever read the Artist reviews, I'll scan for some name droppings, and if I see a name that means something to me, I'll read the whole thing. There were no names I found interesting, but I read it anyway(probably because she is such an interesting looking person). Anyway, I found out that she is doing basically what I would someday like to be doing. I like Rock, and pop rock. A lot of heavier stuff too. But most Artist in this Genre are Bands, and don't really need assistance with their songwriting. I'd love to be able to sit down with a Pink, or Kelly Clarkson, Rob Thomas, heck even a Kelly Osbourne, and work out some hits.

now as far as what level of reader EQ is aimed at, I've been thinking about that for a couple of days now, and I've noticed something. When they do reviews with the who's who of the recording industry, those guys will drop names like ProTools, Neve, SSL, etc..................Very rarely will they talk about their digi 002, Sonar/Cubase, M-Audio 2496, Firepod, or Behringer monitors. So I think it would be pretty fair to say they are aiming right at the Home/Project Studio Crowd. It'd be nice, if they'd do a review of the new Tascam DXb.

I've got to say, out of Mix, Recording, and Sound on Sound, it's my favorite and the only one of the 4 I subscribe to. There is also another good one, if I'm not banned for saying it on here, called Tape Op (www.tapeop.com) which is a free magazine that is totally different from all of these and I believe it to be a good addition to EQ. Get a subscription to EQ - it's worth it!
Rock on EQ!

No worries about mentioning other magazines here folks... I've referred people to SOS archives for articles and reviews, and have mentioned / recommended Tape Op on several occasions.
Of course, EQ is still my personal favorite, and I thank all of you who take the time to read it - and I DO recommend a subscription.
