Hey Chris,
That sounds like fun. If I have time between now and Friday I'll cook something up. \:\)

Ummmmm, let's see. We'll say the game is a first person shooter set in the near future, 2015. This will not be a futuristic type game, but maybe based off real world future technology. How's that for vagueness \:D

Let's create a suspenseful, tense, stealthy type of theme. Maybe between 45 and 70 BPM. Should be able to visualize crouched walk, or just getting ready for infiltration.

If that's not enough and since it is just a make believe scenario, just come up with whatever you like and then describe what you were writing for. Hopefully we'll have enough info to get started.

This will be cool to see what ideas you come up with.

I hope you plan on giving more real world requirements like this one.

The music for this will need to appeal to a wide audience and immediately pull them into the intense pace of this area. The main genre incorporated into this area should contain rock, electronic, and ethnic elements. This area will take place in the Far East and the music should reflect this locale. The primary theme will establish the main character as in control and ready for action. You have one until June 4th at 12:00pm EST.....

Hello Chris,

How long should be the piece? (Is duration important anyway?)
I just stumbled across this thread and think I am a bit late already...

Had a little time to work on it last night and I'm done with my submission. "Invasion Theme".

I tried to incorporate all of the elements where possible: Tempo is 65 bpm, Electronica elements, a little Rawk guitar, ethnic percussion and some other strangeness. I did it in Reason and I finally got to use some of the Orkester sounds in more detail.
The story line (that I am making up as I go along) is this:

Hong Kong, China 4:27 am 02/14/2015. Relations Between the US and China have dissolved and rumors of a super weapon being developed in the heart of Hong Kong have caused quite a stir in security circles. Your job is to find out what the Chinese are up to and report back.
Mission specs: Minimal Impact. Covert Op. Find your own way in and your own way out. Use local resources as necessary. If you are captured the US will deny any knowledge of you or your efforts.
Scene: Your character is swimming in Hong Kong bay trying to negotiate harbor security boats that shine lights randomly about. Once you are on land your first encounter is a small girl running away frightened from a row of buildings with an eerie glow emitting from them. The next thing you see is a set of streaks across the sky as incoming missiles begin to reach landfall all around you. They look to be Russian.
Move quickly to avoid the incoming ordinance and if possible save the small girl now cowering next to a building right in the path of the incoming artillery. Don't get caught...

So obviously it doesn't meet the initial requirements exactly ( \:\) ) but here it is:

Invasion Theme HiFi
Invasion Theme LoFi
Invasion Theme Download

This was fun!

I'll get this done but not in time for the deadline.

I've got a huge amount of work on at the moment, awards to go to tomorrow nite, some masters I've just got back that I need to check out, etc etc etc.

I need a holiday!

Great job DJDM!! Fits really well with your description and you painted your picture very well. BTW, very cool work on the Matrix DVD!

I just received another piece from Ruben and he too did an excellent job of capturing the mood of the scenario. Just goes to show what kind of talent is out there and that a lot of people are very talented!

Gulliver, the piece can be from 30 seconds up to how ever long you want it to be. We can extend the time frame until whenever you guys get done with it. I was just giving you a real world deadline that sometimes you are given. You might only have 3-5 days to get a piece of music to me.....with little to no rewrites. It makes knowing how to write in different styles a little more important with these strict deadlines.

A MOD is a level (or mission) developed by a 3rd party and is typically not supported by the developers of the game. Most games nowadays come with a mission editor and this allows one to create a mission from the tools that the development house used to create their game. Look at Counter Strike and how that took off. There are new maps coming out for most games created by MODers. This is one way to get your feet wet and to see how sounds and music are used in games.

I hope more people will post and share their ideas. This is really fun and I know that people have other jobs, but if you get a chance to put together just a snippet of something, please post it.

No need to worry and rush to get anything done. Like I said above, I wanted to give a deadline that one might get if they were writing for games. We can keep this as an ongoing project and I'll give different scenarios every so often if people are interested.

Is this something that you guys would be interested in?

Groeg I'd definitely be interested in this idea going on.

Gulliver: a more accurate idea of what a mod is can be anything from:

- new weapons
- new player/monster models
- all new gameplay (perhaps first-person-shooter switched to sidescroller)
- new multiplayer modes (perhaps catch a deadly device before the others do, set it off k'boom)

and perhaps all of this combined into one mod, with a story and new levels and yada yada

There were a couple mods that came out for Quake (first-person-shooter) that let the player race cars or fly aircraft. Not all games are modifiable, and the ones that are often require a programmer to learn that games special scripting or coding language. The Quake series and such derivatives from other developers since are most often modifiable and pretty much all the developers are ok with this, actually encouraging it.

Thanks Phait for the better definition of a MOD. I'll keep you guys posted on some new scenarios. Maybe do one a month or something. Any suggestions you guys have would be welcomed too!

Thanks guys! I had a great time working on it.
I tend to write from more of a personal perspective unless I am working on a soundtrack or something. It is always fun having a specific theme and good exercise as well. Mostly I was putting off work on another project so it was a fun deviation. \:\)

I don't know how many of these projects I can manage schedule wise but it is fun and I will also try to stay involved as possible.

As for mods one of the most famous is Counter Strike where the original source code for Half-Life was acquired and a vast online gaming world was created by some very resourceful folks. It is now one of the most popular online gaming cultures on earth and was eventually co-opted back into the fold by Sierra.
There is more about that here:

The GROEG Assignment

June 4,2015, the United States of the Free World (USFW) has won the war on terrorism but now is faced with a new threat of reemerging extremist groups whose only God is called money.
USFW's leaders have informed Major General Groeg that the terrorist claim they have ten nuclear missiles pointed at major capitals and are asking for $50B (that's billions right) before 12pm EST. Groeg being too busy playing video games is putting you in charge of commanding the top elite special forces the USFW has to offer.

Anfar, Tchetchenia. 2.17AM: Your forces are on the ground, watching the terrorist's camp from the distance, night vision goggles on (duh!). You can see the missiles ready to be launched and terrorists sipping tea around a campfire (no they don't play guitar and roast marshmallows).
The adrenaline is pumping, you're in stealth mode, you are ready to launch the attack ... It will have to be quick and precise, one shot to one of the missiles and it's all over ... And if you don't succeed they will probably launch some of the missiles in retaliation .... Images of doom day flash thru your mind ... Damn Groeg, what did you put me thru?

\:\)

Couple of things:
1. I may have gone too epic or a little over the top
2. It gets "romantic" at 1:30 ... but I like the contrast.
3. I faded it out but it's made to loop seamlessly.
4. My story writing skills can only improve

RaGe....very nice work. I really like the background string lines and the guitar when it comes in. Also great way to transition into the ethnic melody line. I actually like the section at 1:30. Way to go!!

Phait, don't give up yet my friend. Never underestimate yourself. Keep writing and let us listen. Don't put so much pressure on this and just be free with what is in your head. Jot down your ideas and rewrite till you are happy. Wait, if you're like me than you will never be happy. \:D
This is just a make believe assignment and should be fun. Drink a few beers and write over the weekend.

I'm going to be out of town (at the beach with the family) all next week, so keep the scores coming in. I'll check back in when I get back and maybe unveil a new scenario. Maybe one in the deep south on a chicken farm....ok, no way!

Great job all you guys!

Okay. I confess, I cheated. The tempo is wrong (184,4 bpm), no guitars... And as if it would be not enough to disqualify me, I deconstructed one of my older (un-used) projects (that's why the tempo is wrong) and built a tune from the scratch using some bits and loops from that project and creating several new ones.
I felt that I can't make a deadline anyway so I just tried to provide "the score" as soon as possible.

Wow! Hey guys thanks so much ... I wasn't expecting such a positive response.
I admit I haven't got time to check the other tunes (I come to this site in 2mn bursts at a time!).

Phait, please don't get discouraged. See this as a journey to the top of the mountain: Will you give up because some guy you know is already half way there? I don't make sense to say fuck it if you have only taken 4 steps. Anyways, I hope you don't give up man.

That would be cool if we could get like 1 or 2 assignments a month. THANKS GROEG! ;\)

RaGe, I downloaded your track too and I'm going to keep it as an example of a great (game) music.

And yes, Phait, you kinda surrender too fast.
Those short three snippets are cool sound collages and are great for starting building a composition(s) around them!

Btw, I firmly believed that a (game) composer is free to choose the tempo for his/her piece, and that all he/she needs to know is: 1) what style, 2) what mood and 3) an approximate (or rather precise) duration of a piece. Oh and of course one has to know what's going on in the game!

You could be right but I have gotten some strange (and often very firm) requests from clients in other areas of production that seem counter intuitive so I think it is safe to say that you never know... ;\)

This is kinda off-topic, but maybe someone can help me.

I'm trying to extract the music and audio files from a game....'Oni', to be specific.

I used to do this all the time with 'Jedi Outcast'. All you needed was Winzip to open the file.

Apparently not so with this game. Does anyone have any suggestions on opening these kinds of files?

Thanks!
