Ok so I'm fooling around with EQ so I can get a good guitar sound that doesn't sound cheaply recorded. This is probably a long shot considering this is all I have:

Fender Strat run through Fantom-S effects.

I also have Logic 6 but I have not used it for the following MP3 example:

http://www.thecarbonflaw.com/crap/guitareq.mp3 about 700k

I'm trying to achieve a sound like Coal Chamber, Sevendust, The Deadlights. I think I should be cutting some highs... but here's what I've run it through so far:

+ GUITAR AMP SIM
- 3 stack
- distortion
- Pre-Amp Gain: Middle
- PA Bass: 64 (out of 127)
- PA Middle: 32
- PA Treble: 32

+ SPECTRUM
- 250 Hz: -6 db
- 500 Hz: -5 db
- 1000 Hz: 0 db
- 1250 Hz: -5 db
- 2000 Hz: +2 db
- 3150 Hz: -4 db
- 4000 Hz: -1 db
- 8000 Hz: -2 db
- Q: 1.0

+ COMPRESSOR
- Attack: 20
- Threshold: 64
- Post Gain: +6 db
- Low Gain: 0 db
- High Gain: 0 db

+ CHORUS
- Filter Type: LPF
- Cutoff Freq: 8000 Hz
- PreDelay: 1.5 MSec
- Rate: 1.25 Hz
- Depth: 30
- Phase: 90 deg.
- Feedback: 70

+ REVERB
- Type: delay
- Time: 25
- HF Damp: 1000 Hz
- Delay Feedback: 70

Also there was some low freq. throughout the file so I took off about 6 to 8 db from 300 Hz and below in software (Audacity).

Any suggestions to improve this and kill that cheap tone? I cannot afford new gear I have to work with what I've got so if there's some EQ enlightenment or effects suggestions, great! Thanks.

3k is usually a frequency to boost slightly with heavy guitars like the styles you're talking about. Cut more lows out of there. I'd strongly suggest a different guitar. Also, don't forget to double and pan.

Yeah I forgot about doubling/panning. I have been wanting to get a guitar with humbucker pickups... I can always get the Strat modified to emulate that fat sound for like $14...

I still think you'd be better off not cutting 3k.

Aren't these bands doing seriously scooped guitars? Check and see if they are downtuning, too. Consider boosting more of the lows, and like the other post said, I wouldn't cut anywhere around 3000 Hz much, if at all. I don't know the exact frequencies to cut when going for scooped guitars, because to be honest, if we're recording that kind of guitar, the guy's already got it coming out of the amp. With the Boss Heavy Metal pedal, I noticed that there seems to be a lot of boosting around what I am guessing is approximately the 250Hz range to give it a lot of chunk in the bottom end.
