I never use loops.

I do use samples.

I suspect project guys use more than their share of samples cause of the constraints involved in getting a string or brass section into your den or basement to record.

While there are some reviews around it is hard to find out what is out there this is really worthwhile.

My fav. Bosendorfer piano from and EMU collection.

Steve Gadd drums. (audio format - have to build your own presets)

Synclavier strings - good stacatto violyns and a cello i really like.

I have some horn sections but Im not too happy with them.

A while ago I was looking into some new bass samples - but I just bought a Fender Jazz bass instead ( cause i actually have a shot at playing this reasponably) and I can run it thru the sansamp ive already got.

BTW Im still using a hardware sampler- Emu64.
I havent found it necessary to go native PC yet - tho I know this is makes sense these days.

So, any favorite samples you care to share?

Favorite samples.... I've done the collect samples and soundfonts from the net. It's hit and miss with the free stuff out there... mostly miss with the best luck finding drum kits and samples. I've got a ton of those free on the net. Kits I tear down throw in to massive directories, kicks, snares, hihats etc... and then build my own kits in VSampler. My first
experience with actual sample CD's was a CD from
Pro Samples with my Keyboard subscription. That was full of usable stuff and turned me towards being a sample purchaser. I'm bought some stuff from Sonic Implants, orchrestral stuff and some basses and guitars I like. My quest will continue. Poor wallet.

The Ross Garfield Drum Doctor sample CD's are pretty cool... but to be honest, I don't use a heck of a lot of samples. Yeah, I've got some stuff in Giga, and some stuff on my old ESI-32, but I tend to use live instruments whenever possible. But having the samples available is certainly nice for when you don't have access to something.

I do use loops a lot, but as far as samples go I've been using the samplers in reason quite a bit (I'm changing over to "in -da-box."). I'm just now building my samples in Reason., so I can't yet give you my favorites.

The samples I use are in the Proteus 1, Proteus 2, E-mu's Vintage Keys, and Roland's
JV-880, JV 1080, JP-8000, and a Yamaha RY-30 Drum machine.

Some of my favorite sounds are found in the Roland "Sessions" expansion card for the JV-1080.

I used to have Ensonic's SQ-1 that had some nice brass sounds, but I traded that in years ago for other equipment.

My favorite samples/sample CD is the Yellowtools Pure Guitar mutisamples. I use the Nylon Concert patch a lot in my tracks. Matter of fact, I used it on my track submission to the upcoming Keyboard Corner Compilation CD Vol.7/8 (shameless plug) \:D
I use a lot of drumloops though which I think is essential to every dance music production. I chop them up in Recycle and export it to my Akai S5000 for further tweaking. I love e-Lab's Nu Directions-The Phuture Sound of House and almost anything coming out from Ueberschall.
Bass samples? You need not look any further. Instead of parting your cash for bass sample libraries, you'd be better off spending it on a copy of Spectrasonic's Trilogy Rompler.

Yellowtools Pure Drums and Pure E-Basses (they also have a Pure Guitars set which my ego won't allow). Very naturally recorded, many velocity layers for expression, available for Akai, EXS, Giga.

I have some excellent hip-hop samples that I bought for my MPC 2000 years ago that come in very handy once in a while. Souncrafting in GA also has a nice collection. You can get a whole bunch of useful samples for about $100.

I've also supplimented my drums with Clearmountain samples to double them up in mixdown.

YMMV.

I just remembered I bought my original sample collection from soundsforsamplers.com but I find soundcrafting.com an easier site to follow.

I also have the Clearmountain East-West drum samples. I use a snare from that.
However, the rest of my sampled kit comes from the S Gadd collection i mentioned- its more organic/woody.
