I just learned that lesson and it came in handy. My super cool new Portable Rig was working fine for a week until the Dell 8600 decided to bite it...I had spent several days transering all my Mac Pro Tools sessions for my new CD and 2 Client's CD's, over to the Dell, as it was to be my new #1 system. I have an old 8600 Mac with a G4 card in it that's been rock solid for almost 7 years and when I sold the Digi001 system I picked up an AMIII card to slap in it so I could still use Pro Tools on it, Edit and even record from external pres if needed...Good thing I did this!!! Dell is sending me a new laptop and I'm able to still have all my sessions this week because everything is still on the Mac as well....Well there were some new tracks etc that we put on the PC that are not on the Mac but we are still tracking so it's not a big deal. I'll just transfer everything back over when I get the PC PT system back up by Monday.......
Anyway, just thought I would share that experience with everyone...ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP!!!!

I think the biggest lesson here is to always have a backup of your data...
In an emergency, I can go down to one of the local megastores and get new Pro Tools hardware. Because I build my own PC's, I can have a new one built in a couple of hours, with parts available locally. Now, that's not meant to Mac bash... I appreciate the value of Macs, but getting them repaired can mean a bit more downtime than what some PC owners face. My point is that what isn't easily replaced is the actual data.
My Digi 002 died on me shortly after I got it - about two months or so, if memory serves. It was one of the very first units shipped, and there was a loose power harness problem with a small percentage of the early units. Hey, problems acn happen with anything. But in Digidesign's defense, they had a replacement unit shipped out to me via overnight delivery, and paid for the return of the defective unit. I've always had excellent customer support from the people at Digidesign.

ALWAYS back up your data folks. Unless you don't mind losing it.

Don't worry, that isn't Mac bashing because the principle applies just as much to a Dell (or Compaq, etc.) as a Mac.
I think the moral is, it you are going to use a PC you should build it yourself, which is what I do also.

Most PT users (at least until recently ) were professionals with megasystems and tight deadlines so it doesn't surprise me that digi and avid would be so diligent about keeping their customers happy...but I'm talking out of my a*s so let me know if I'm wrong

If you are recording on ADAT, you are forbidden to monitor on Yamaha NS-10s. Monitoring audio recorded with a 414 on NS-10s is punishable by stoning.
