There is a local supplier, Energy Innovations , located on Fox St downtown. They sell UltraTouch Acoustic Cotton at very impressive prices, about half of what I recently paid online. Their main focus is environmentally-friendly construction materials, I can't imagine they get many calls from recording studios.

This material specs out fantastically, its absorption coefficient is pretty close to 1.0 over most of the audio spectrum. It is available in 5.5" and 3.5" thicknesses, in both 16" and 24" wide batts.

This stuff is pretty far from rigid, but it works very well as a sound absorber. I've made broadband absorbers and gobos out of it and I'm thrilled with the performance so far. Though I'd be very curious to see how it performs side-by-side with rockwool and rigid fiberglass.

Anyway, this place in Portland sells packages of 5.5" thick batts, 24" wide, 94" long in packs of 4 (63 sq ft) for $60. The same product, 16" wide in a 5-pack (52 sq ft) is $49.

In terms of DIY acoustic treatments on a budget, I think this stuff is a STRONG contender. I think the 16" wide batts placed between ceiling joists and covered with cloth is a nontoxic, huge performer for someone building a basement studio, at a price not much more than normal fiberglass insulation, with better specs and non of the toxic fiberglass handling stuff.

VERY cool, though admittedly it's a bit disconcerting to realize that for what I spent just a few weeks ago having this stuff shipped out, I could have picked up more than twice as much cotton from a local, green, environmentally conscious business.

I have found a place in Little Rock, Arkansas that has a surplus of Knauf 160, 2" ridgid F/G insulation. It is Johnson Products LLC,[formaly Morrow Insulation], 6209 MurraY ST. PHONE 501-568-5496, ask for "Tim" I paid $54.00 a bundle of 32 pieces of 2"x24"x48" sheets. Knauf has an accoustical chart for their insulation on their web site.

This forum has been very useful to me in building my studio in a 100 year old farm house. Thanks Ethan.

Here's the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area source for the Owens Corning 700 series products.

George V. Hamilton Co.

They stock 703, 703FRK, 705, 705FRK and most likely more. They also have the Johns Manville IIG Min Wool 1200 products. Very nice people to deal with and good pricing.

As of April 2006:
703 $0.70 sq. ft.
703FRK $1.01 sq. ft.
705 $1.23 sq. ft.
705FRK $1.55 sq. ft.

This was all 2" in 2'X4' squares.

East Coast, Virginia specifically, if you need a large amount, this is the place to go. Please note, if you're buying 1-2 boxes, better to look elsewhere, because they are a volume dealer and they only ship point-to-point.

Does anybody have any southern New Hampshire or northern Massachusetts sources for OC or equivalent rigid fiberglass panels? I've tried a lot of places and still no luck.

Thank you for any ideas.

I just picked up 2 bundles of 2" unfaced Johns Manville at EJ Bartells in Seattle (http://www.ejbartells.com/). Each bundle has 9 2x4 sheets, and I think the total for both was about 120.00. I'm going to pick up some burlap today! Very excited....

Hi there!

New to the forum, but an Ethan´s Fan!
Thanks for clearing up all my disturbed thought about acoustics, heh!

Somebody can give me just ANY tip on where to get something similar to the #705 rigd fiberglass down here in Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA? International shipping would be really high, right?

Thanks in advance

CURRENT SPI PRICES and
DALLAS/FORTWORTH

SPI [800.788.7764 nationally, 214.956.7781 Dallas, FTW #?] carries OC, Fibrex etc. I just picked up a lot of Fibrex 8 lb. 2" at $.59/sq.ft. Not sure their exact OC price but the Tulsa prices per sqare foot for 2" were:

-Fibrex 1280 (8 lb.) $.49
-OC 703 (3 lb.) $.84
-OC 705 (6 lb.) $1.52.

So Dallas prices are a little higher. In this case, the 705 costs 3x as much as the denser Fibrex even though the Fibrex handles lows better (see bob golds coefficients).

There are contacts to all the local insulation distributors nationwide. Also a good source for info. The fiberglass & mineral wool boards should be common stock for any insulation supplier.
Anything in the mid-atlantic try McCormick Insulation Supply 800-989-7013.

I'll let the link to this foam vendor stand for now. But this thread is for local sources of rigid fiberglass and equivalent materials, not foam. Finding mail order foam is not difficult, and there's much less need for a link to that here. Also, it's difficult to recommend any vendor that claims their foam offers diffusion, since that shows they don't even understand what it does.

Axeman, do you have any direct experience with this vendor?

Ya I bought some from them
they have some really good prices and got it out to me fast. I plan on buying some more from them soon

I really was not sure of exactly what types of materials these guys was looking for.

but to be perfectly honest you will probably find just as good of a deal at your local Lowes or Home Depot for a lot of this rigid foam and fiberboard insulation I am assuming that the folks are looking to find materials for sound isolating and sound deflection pannells for a DIY home studio Project.

I would also mention that roofing foam is very rigid and flame retardant whch works excellemt for sound proofing that very easy to work with for making shaped wall corners a and overhead deflection panels.
it comes in several thicknesses and can be glued together with spray adhesive to get the desired shapes someone may need to make and can also be painted.
you can find it at most building materials suppliers as well.
