Because of space constraints (I live in a little condo) I'm trying to build a temporary vocal booth for my home studio. I've purchased six 24" x 7' 3/8 inch plywood panels and eight 24" x 48" x 2" Illbruck studio foam (which was the only brand available in Hawaii). I'll be double stick taping the foam onto the boards, which, with hinges, will open and close to form a hexagon shaped booth around the vocalist.

The purpose of this temporary booth is to record vocals, and nothing more.

Am I on the right track with this? All I'm trying to do is reduce mid and high frequency reflections, which plague my small recording/control room. Please keep in mind that I'm not primarily concerned with keeping sound in or out, just trying to keep my vocals dry.

Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well then...if you are only looking to kill early reflections...

...you may not need to actually build a booth...which will be rather confining, hot and uncomfortable.

Instead just build an isolation wall out of 3 or 5 pieces(a half hexagon or a half octagon shape), and have the singer sing 'into' the wall...
...while keeping the open end of the wall facing your farthest studio wall.

That should take of early reflections, while also leaving the singer feeling comfortable, with plenty of air.

Plus, you will be able to move the isolation wall around as needed!

Scott,

I agree with Miroslav. If you're merely trying to cut down on room ambience picked up by the microphone, just surround yourself with absorbent material. Building an entire structure as you described seems like serious overkill.

Miroslav and Ethan, thank you for the advice. I think out of all the processes used to create a good recording, acoustics is the least understood by most people (including me!).

I just spent about $280 for the studio foam panels but I hope it will be a good investment that will pay off with more solid, clear vocals that help reduce the echos that come from a small 8' x 8' x 10' room with no carpet and acoustic ceiling.

Many thanks!
