I have been reading here about bass traps made out of rigid insulation wrapped in fabric, then hung across a corner of the studio...i assume there is no frame or plywood in a lot of these designs. Is a bass trap just as effective without the wood frame and plywood?

Hoss,

Those are two completely different ways to make bass traps, and both approaches have pros and cons. For most small rooms, corner-mounted fiberglass panels make sense. Larger rooms with a lot of wall surface benefit from wood panel traps.

Thanks Ethan! I have a small room 9' x 9' x 9'...terrible dimensions i know...trying to make it as usable as possible for mixing. I have installed two fabric wrapped 4" rockwool (8 lb.) traps in corners...still not a lot of improvement in the low end at the mix position. So it seems that using plywood and frames wouldn't help much. More fabric wrapped traps?

Yes, and don't forget the ceiling corners.
