So what are the good folks doing? If anything, re: measurement tools and software.

If you have comments, links, or downloads, by all means post away.

I'll be getting ETF when I get to my new place - Ethan has a thread around here someplace about it plus I think it would be easier to communicate with him and some of you folks in common terms & graphs found in that product. I can affort ETF like most folks better than Smaart & some other stuff...

Johnny,

As Kylen said I just bought ETF from http://www.acoustisoft.com. It costs only $150 yet does all the important tests the $5,000 hardware analyzers do. Highly recommended.

Plus, I forgot to mention, I am bound by my oath as a DIY garage guy to only use ECM8000 omni measuring mic ($39) or equivalent thereof...hehe

Kylen,

> I am bound by my oath as a DIY garage guy <

Hey, I'm the cheapest SOB in the world! But it's important to know when to save money and when to spend it. I drive a ten year old car with 180,000 miles on it, but I also have killer large bi-amped JBL monitors that kick serious butt.

There are two great programs:

1. SmaartLive 5 and
2. Acoustic Tools 4

SIA-Smaart software provides a suite of serious measurement, analysis and system alignment tools for the pro audio, acoustical consulting, engineering and performing arts communities.

SmaartLive working in Spectrum mode, enables two channels of
real-time spectrum analysis. In this mode, SmaartLive contains functions similar to a hardware RTA
(real-time analyzer), where the incoming signals are decomposed into frequency components and
displayed dynamically. By default, SmaartLive displays the two channels as a real-time bar graph of
energy vs. frequency, with each bar representing a band of energy 1/12th-octave wide , although many
other displays are possible.

Card,

Thanks for the information.

One of the really great features of ETF is it can resolve low freqency response down to a fraction of 1 Hz. Does the Smaart software do that too, or is it limited to 1/12th octave?

The frequency scale (x-axis) of the RTA plot may be displayed in octave, 1/3-, 1/6-, 1/12-, or 1/24-octave resolution. Narrowband resolution with linear or logarithmic scaling is also available.
