Ethan, your input is requested-

I am preparing to redo my control room and I wanted to solicit opinions on best ways to get a decent result-

It is a yuck shape- 16 x 16 x 9

There is an 8 x 8 parquet floor in the middle of the room which is for the console / mix position. I have installed a angled reflector above the mix position which is reflecting to the rear of the room. (I think this has been the best bit of treatment installed actually)

presently, I have a combo hi mid absorber / diffussor on the rear wall which is centered and its dimensions are 8' wide x 4ft tall , and two mid absorbers to the sides of the mix position these are also 8' wide and 4' tall.

On the front wall, there is some foam which runs the width of the wall and is about 5' ft high.

I also have some of the foam corner traps installed in the corners.

In most cases, the room doesn't sound too bad, There is however a lot of bass build up in the rear of the room, and funny nulling in the mix position in the upper mid range.

I am using 5 channels of HR 824- Which I quite like. (for the mackie haters- I have tried others and ditched Genelec 1030's because they were very hyped in the top end)
I also use a subwoofer since I do film sound design in the space. their location in the room is approx, 3ft out from the front wall, with the left right speakers about 7 ft from each other.

Anyway-

I was planning on gutting the room and using your trap design to do the following-

I will abreviate the traps like this-
Deep Bass Trap - A
High Bass Trap - B
Mid High Absorber -C

On the side walls starting with the corner-

side wall 1: A,A,C,B,C,B,A,A
side wall 2: A,A,B,C,B,C,A,A
rear wall: A,A,C,B,C,Door,A
front wall: A,B, Window, B,A

I am not really in a position to trap the ceiling due to my arrangement with the facility, but the wall traps will not be a problem.

As I mentioned earlier, I plan on removing all the foam products as well.

Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Charles,

It sounds to me like you're pretty close already, and really just need some decent bass traps. If you're concerned about not damaging the place too much, I think you'll do better buying rigid fiberglass and straddling the room corners, or buy a commercial equivalent. That way you can treat the ceiling corners too, without making a bunch of holes in the walls and ceiling. And you can leave the foam corners and just put more traps in front of them.

Ethan,

First allow me to apologize for not saying thanks to your suggestions earlier- I do greatly appreciate them-

I am happy to hear that I am on the right road to making the room sound better as well-

One question, Is there any problem with covering the Deep Bass traps with a fabric?

I think in my case, I would like to have the room more uniform in appearance.

thanks again!!!

Charles,

If it's very thin, and weighs much less than the wood, it will probably be okay. But you might consider painting them instead. I know for sure that does not affect the trap's performance.
