Assuming I would use bass traps as in the design on ethanwiner.com, would it be possible to "enhance" the high freq absorption of the lower bass units by putting foam on the visible surface, or would that dampen the sympathetic vibrations and compromise bass performance?

SG,

Yes, you can place foam or rigid fiberglass in front of the wood panels, but you must space it away so it doesn't touch the panels at all.

I'll also mention that unless your room is very small, you should build the "system" of three trap types as explained in the article. That will give you the correct amount and balance of absorption. If you feel it's still too live after they're all installed, then you can consider covering some of the wood panel traps.

So you would have the foam suspended in front of the trap as opposed to attatched in some way? BTW, the room is small. It's actually a spare bedroom with one end the home office and the other end mixing desk (so much for symmetry). My goal right now is to install my PC/hardware in the closet for noise control, and try to smooth out the freq response around the mix station via realtraps. Your thoughts on attaining that?

As an aside, I saw in a previous post that you recommend OC 705 for floating floors. Is it actually rigid enough for that? Wouldn't the floor be prone to "bouncing" (noticeably) and instability?

Regards.

Swing,

You could attach it at the very edges where the panel is joined to the wood rails. That's what I did with 2-inch 705 panels I put in front of some of my panel traps that were in the path of early reflections. In that case the nails or screws are actually going into the edges of the rails.

If you haven't read it already, see the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my Articles page:

Yes. 703 is probably too squishy for floating a floor, but 705 is great for that.
