We're playing tonight at the Sheraton in San Pedro for the last time. We decided we don't like playing there... not our turf, hard to get our audience in, yada yada. We'd rather spend our energies looking for a cooler place to play.

So, if any LA-based band wants to play at a hotel club in San Pedro once a month on a Saturday night for $300 - $400 guarantee plus whatever you can get at the door, let me know. We're officially backing out of our contract after tonight, which gives them a full month to find a band to replace us.

That's gonna be a long drive home, Ted-man. ;\)

I forgot to mention: gig is from 9PM - 1AM, and after teardown, you usually roll in about 2:30.

Hours aren't too bad - after all, musicians invented unsociable hours. \:D

I'll play guitar for Tedster - any drummers?

Nah, the hours are totally in normal range. I think when non-musicians hear this, though, they don't add in an extra half hour to load out, a half hour waiting around to get paid, and a half hour drive home.

Gig ends at 1:00? Sleepytime at 3:00, if you don't do the post-gig 24-hour diner run (and then it's later). Chicken fried steak and eggs tastes great after a night of rock!

One of the few things I miss about L.A. is all the late night post-gig meals at Canter's.

We're a 4-piece band. How hard can it be?

You tear down the mains and subs and monitors, then the mixer/amps of the PA rig. Then drums, then guitar amps and instruments. Then little things like mics and pedals and such. Everything gets racked and put on hand trucks, then out to the trailer.

IF all four of us are chipping in, it shouldn't take more than 30-40 minutes.

How long does it take you guys, Botch?

Late night meals with your bandmates is pretty darn good no matter what town you're in! Talk about some odd folks out for some grub after all the bars close. VA Beach's fave for after hours breakfast or whathaveyou is a place on VA Beach BLVD (DENNY HELP WITH THE NAME) that has everything from rasta's to punks and everything on the fringes. No violence so far that I know of.....but some great people watching and good food. Least I think it tastes good, seein's that I have only been in there when a bit altered. \:\)

Kearney (pronounced Carney) Missouri...

The Kearney Truck Plaza. Open all night. Nice waitresses who call you "Hon" while filling your cup of coffee. No, not hot waitresses...truck stop waitresses. But they're nice. Kansas City's "North of the River" after-gig culinary palace.

Jeeze--I am home before midnight...can't do those late nighters anymore...7 to 11 are our usual gigs. And they pay each member ::: a $500 guarantee. ( Averaging $250 each player/ per hour > this summer ) A 5 piece plus booking agent. We have the smallest gear possible >> they are all strings! ( and a MIDI drum kit). Think of that no amps/mains --- few clip-on mics for the viola/cello, etc. No vocals. Roland drum machine for audio from the kit. And we get to play 60/70's rock~motown~pop. We have the luxury of pluging into the house systems, from our little rack mixer. I have one 5" monitor. AND the agent includes a fab dinner!

That's the One!!! That's the One!!!!

As a matter of interest to that, back in 1964, we just had one of our regular band breakups and had reformed with some new, old mates. This gave us 3 guitars & bass, but no drums. We were invited to play at the 'Pakistani Independent Day Celebrations' in Glasgow (big Asian community in Glasgow). We arrived with no drummer, but decided to go on without. However, the turn before us was two Asian lads singing and playing fairly large and loud drums slung over their shoulder.

We decided to ask them to play along with us and they agreed.

The first number was 'I Got My Mojo Working'.

Try to imagine it - boom pitty boom pitty boom. Amazingly, it seemed to work & we made our way through the set of '60s Beatles, Stones and R&B numbers with Asian drum backing. The mainly Pakistani audience was very enthusiastic. My first taste of curry was that night.

Years later I told my students that, on that day, we invented Bhangra.

Geoff.

Man this must be a California thing. I think most bands around here would walk over the bodies of their relatives for a steady gig like that!

I figure the way the airlines are hurting these days, they'd be quick to offer us a deal. Right?

Back in the day, I had setup/teardown time for my drumkit down to 15 minutes; just under 20 minutes if the space was tight.
If we carpool, Tedster, you can stop by on the way and pick me up; we could alternate the Golden to LA drive every other week by leaving your car in my garage.

I miss Steak'n'Shake at 3:30 a.m.

Well, we're a cover band. Having done the original band thing for a long time in my youth, I speak from experience saying that getting a gig as a cover band is 8,000,000 times easier than being paid to play your own tunes to people.

For anyone who can play well, at least here in SoCal, cover bands should be able to gig every weekend of the year if they want to. There's no shortage of bars and clubs that want a band on a Friday or Saturday night.

If we wanted to play weddings, corporate events and so on, we could get paid to play three nights a week, every week. Even just playing the bars, we could easily do a gig every weekend. that's why we can pick and choose our venues.

- Jeff
