I've just stumbled across a vintage Carlsbro TC 40 CS valve amp head. I was wondering if other people used vintage valve amps in their bands. I use it for playing guitar but i was thinking about using it to play the bass through.

Go to the Guitar Forum and look for the 'Ask Miles' thread and post your question there - he's the Tube Amp Yoda.

Lots of people do! I look at old amps like old cars. I wouldn't drive one for my main ride unless I made sure it was fit for the job. If its hummin, poppin, cracklin, smellin, and doin odd volume things without touching it.......look under the hood! \:\)

I've played nothing but old tube amps since I was 16. I still have one of the amps I bought when I was 16, it was already pretty old then and I've never had any problems with it whatsoever. \:\) I play my old amps (as in 35-40 years old) out at every gig and have never had one go wrong on me.

Not every vintage amp is alike, some models are known to be more reliable than others. And if you buy one it's best to have a tech go over it ASAP to spot any potential problems and fix them. But once you get 'em in gigging shape they can stay that way practically forever.

for how much? it's a fine amp if the price is right.
or do you already have it? if you do, then jesus christ, plug it in and come to your own conclusions. only YOU know what you like...... (if you don't like it, feel free to donate it to me)

Exactly. I don't find that old amps require any more maintenance (or a greater likelihood of breaking down) than any new amp.

In some cases, they're probably more reliable.

cheers guys, i've used it with my guitar and it sounds amazing. i was thinking of using it when i go into the studio next with my band. but i will have a play about with it before hand.
sorry d gauss, i don't think i'll be giving this away for love nor money.

i've had to change the power lead on it, and was told that i needed to change the light indicator. but apart from that it runs fine.

i'm also in the process of getting a marshall 2x12 cab for it, for my guitar. and have a peavey 4x10 cab to play bass through.
