I posted this in the LowDown forum too, but it seemed appropriate here as well I figured that maybe we can all exchange setlist?
My band is just getting started, so we don't have a fixed list yet. But here's what we have so far (in no particular order):
- Free: All Right Now - Black Sabbath: Paranoid - Deep Purple: Black Night - Deep Purple: Strange Kind Of Woman - Neil Young: Rocking In The Free World - The Who: Behind Blue Eyes - Uriah Heep: Stealin - Steppenwolf: Born To Be Wild - Status Quo: Claudie - Status Quo: Wild Side of Life
Some stuff we plan on doing (or that I want to propose to the band ) includes
- Asia: Heat Of The Moment - Guns 'n' Roses: 14 Years - The Beatles: Come Together - Free: The Hunter - Free: Wishing Well - The Scorpions: The Zoo - The Scorpions: New Generation - Judas Priest: Hell Bent For Leather - Iron Maiden: Lord Of The Flies - Saxon: Play It Loud - Nirvana: Come As You Are - Nick Lowe: Cruel To Be Kind
And some typical stuff like "Sweet Home Alabama" and so on
The idea is to get a bunch of well- or lesser-known cover songs, and in time throw in some originals as well.
Anyone want to play?

as a "blues" band made of aging punk rockers, well we don't have setlists... i (or some other more sober band member) calls the songs as we go. we have the luxury of having a coupla hundred songs to choose from. many, many, (most) are originals, but then again, on a whim, the "bee gees" or "black flag" might crop up.... it's all good.

I'm not in a band. My last few bands, we only played originals.
I jammed with some friends Saturday in a local bar. It was obviously going to be all covers. We played non-stop for about 4 hours, so I'm not likely to remember all of the songs....
Changes Young Americans I Need You Strawberry Fields You Can't Do That Baby, It's You We Gotta Get Outta This Place Montego Bay Since I Been Lovin' You Here Comes The Rain Again Still In Saigon Needles and Pins Last Time Under My Thumb My Old School Don't Take Me Alive Sugar Magnolia Friend of the Devil Not Fade Away/She's The One Gloria Wild Nights Little Wing Axis:Bold as Love The Boxer Bookends/Old Friends
....gee, they flow from the fingers when we're playing them, but I just can't remember more than that.
Bill

Yep and it will be done a million times more at least.. the cover game! We used to do original stuff but nobody wanted to hear it so we stopped! When you are a cover band.... ahhhh.. you do covers! Especially when you have no talent for writing original songs!!! It is difficult to be compared to anyone doing covers.. every time you do a cover you are compared to the original version so people have a real basis for criticism or complements.

i understand how difficult it is to write music that people want to hear, BUT! people like live music, if they know it or not. i love throwing a cover into a set list every now and again, but all it seems is that everyone on here only plays covers. how about doing your own versions of over bands songs, play it as if it was your own song, play about with it.
Bill, i agree with playing all originals.
i know it's a 50/50 subject, some won't ever play covers and some bands will. But i feel, if a band write a song of thier own, they deserve all the credit in the world for trying!!!
i hope i haven't upset anyone with this subject.
all the best everyone, annd keep rocking out whatever you play

Our set list varies from venue to venue, but we incorporate originals any chance we get. I'm writing set lists now for three very different shows in the next three weeks:
Grand Rapids PRIDE - an outdoor festival. We're playing four sets at four different times of day, so we're mixing it up a lot. One all-acoustic set, one all-original set, one blues/rock set, one free-for-all jam set. We'll incorporate several cover tunes into this show, because at this type of festival, the audience will sing along and participate if they know the tune. Luckily the local public radio station gives us lots of airplay, so a bunch of the audience will already be familiar with our originals. Should be from 3 - 5,ooo people there.
ALPENA Blues festival - this will be an hour of all original blues rock. We might do one cover, but it'll be a cover we put our own spin on.
Kalamazoo Blues Festival - an hour of acoustic, all traditional blues. We'll do about half originals, and covers by Susan Tedeschi, Keb Mo, and others.
I try as much as I can to find out what type of audience will be at the venue, and write the set list for maximum audience appeal. However as I tell the sound tech every weekend - the set list is just a guideline. If we get a request we try to honor it if we know it, especially if someone requests an original, we get RIGHT on those. Or we might feel like tossing out something completely outer limits.
Versitility is keeping us working. We realized that by only doing originals, or only doing a certain type of blues, we were costing ourselves potential venues. We take the blues/rock show to rock bars with good success, the blues show to blues clubs and festivals, and the acoustic show to restaurants.

I think that most cover bands (with the exception of tribute bands) do their own versions of other bands material. I don't think I have ever went to a concert where the headliner band does their own material exactly like their recording version. In most cases it is far better live than the recorded version. I might be wrong here but in most cases the cover bands here set up their set lists so that they can work ALOT... most of the all original (non-signed) groups dont work very much! or end up playing for free
