We have had no luck whatsoever with current songs. We do well with classic rock, 80's hair metal, blues, novelty songs... but every time we try a new (current) song it just doesn't seem to work well and we toss it after a show or two.

Is it us? The songs? Are we doomed to be an "oldies" band?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Probably has to do with the fact that most of the current popular stuff SUCKS. \:D That doesn't mean there isn't any good current music, but most of it's so far underground that it isn't really cover band material. As far as mainstream radio pop, etc... gag me!

Go for some newer U2 or Motley Crue? I don't know, seriously more people listen to classic rock than the new stuff anyways. You probably have nothing to worry about, but if you really feel like you have to get some current songs, people really like the new Green Day album... or Foo Fighters... I don't know if that's too far from your current set list though.

Well, we were going to try some Foo Fighters... we just can't agree on which song.

We're finding that most of the new stuff that we like isn't getting much airplay. So for us to learn stuff by The Killers isn't really worthwhile.

We're playing in Ocean City this summer... I'd hate to not be able to hold the crowd.

Yeah exactly! The new rock stations just suck (and Clear Channel is now dropping most of its new rock stations because their ratings are down the toilet - rather than play anything good they're just dropping the format  ) so it's not worthwhile for cover bands to learn that stuff. And the good stuff is too underground to make it worthwhile either. And of course if you play anything the crowd doesn't know they don't like it... a result of having been pandered to by radio for so long.

I'm currently inspired by the "Coverville" podcast. Not only am I reminded of some really great songs (which should be recognizable to most barstool specimens), but hearing some really cool takes on stuff to steal from . . . er, I mean, to find influential.

BaDum CHING!!

He'll be here all week, folks... \:D

Seriously, though, do some fresher, older material, but toss in a few of the newies that aren't getting much airplay. Not so much you alienate the audience, but just enough to pique their curiosity.

Well I can't say this works for everyone, but I've been a disciple of early British invasion stuff and its clones in the states. Take those songs and make em your own, it'll sound BRAND NEW! In Norfolk the Factory Playboys (my old band) used to rip the dust off all those early sixties gems, and it was punk as @#$%. Incredibly fun too. Start with Strycnine or however you spell it.

Have you tried "Are You Going to Be My Girl" by Jet? I've seen a few bands cover it, some good, some not so good. But it's a fun tune.

Radar Gun by the Bottlerockets
California Kid by the Beatfarmers
Marie, Marie by the Derailers
Shadowland by Steve BY GOD Earle
Rock Candy by Montrose
IF you can nail these, you'll ditch the radio play stuff.

Mike, here's some that work for us (sorry I don't know the original artist in every case):
Hellagood/No Doubt: needs some sequencing but does not need a chick singer.
She F&*$% Hates Me/? : our closer for the night
Island in the Sun/Weezer? Ween? Wilco?
Real World/?
Warning/?
The Middle/?
Harder to Breathe/Maroon 5: our opener
Are You Gonna Be My Girl/Jet: as Cherri suggested...
Heaven/Los Lonely Boys
1985/Bowling for Soup?

and a few that didn't work for us:
Stacey's Mom/Fountains of Wayne (probably because I was singing it)
That Trane song...

Hope that gives you a couple ideas...

'Current' rock radio absolutely sucks, PERIOD. Can't even THINK of a few tunes that are 'bankable' for a cover band. It seems like in record land there is a contest going on to see who can come up with the tune that sucks the most. (Yes, I admit it ---- you have touched a sore spot, a very raw nerve in my heart.)

Great suggestions... please keep them coming!

We already play She Hates Me and The Middle.

We tried both the Jet song and Stacy's Mom a couple of times at practice. We just weren't "feeling it" so we canned them (but we are now revisiting them). I suggested Hash Pipe at least a dozen times, but that never made its way in, either.

I sent out an email to the band with the other suggestions... we'll see what happens.

Thanks again!

Mike

"Hash Pipe" would be cool.

I'm telling our band to try the new Weezer tune "Beverly Hills". We've had "Buddy Holly" in the set list before, which has worked well.

We tried Foo Fighters' "All My life", but the screaming was too much for my poor singer.
