The drummer in my band is friends with one of the sound engineers at the Hollywood Bowl. They needed a band to play so that they could tune up their PA for the summer season. So he asked us to play.

I have been to concerts before there, and from the audience, the people on stage always looked so far away. But from the stage, the audience looks very close. What a great place to play a bunch of classic rock and roll songs. And the PA! It was unbeleivable. This was a PA that is a PA! We are a six piece, and everybody had their own monitor mix. I could hear everything on stage, my Leslie 2101, my piano, my synth, vocals, and my lead guitar player who was about 45 feet away from me on the other side of the stage. And we only took up about half of the stage!

Everyone in the audience said the FOH sound was great. They drove the neighborhood to check sound levels and made adjustments while we played. The FOH mixer said he had the SPL at his position at 110 dB.

It was a great 2 hour experience, even though we were only playing to about 40 or 50 people, mostly friends and family. What a cool deal this was. I hope they ask us back again next year.

We usually play for money. Last night we played for fun, and it was a blast.

Rick

I went there once ages ago when it was empty and just walked around on the stage to see what the perspective was (and think things like; 'The Beatles were here' et all). Must have been a blast to actually play!

That freakin rawks! What a fun time! I used to love going to the Bowl when I lived in L.A.

A friend of mine had the ultimate Bowl experience though... a few years ago there was a Beatles tribute there, featuring Sir George Martin conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. There was an all-star band too, including Stewart Copeland on drums, and various guests got up and sang different Beatles songs with this whole crew. My friend got to sing "I Am the Walrus" with the full orchestra doing the original score conducted by Sir George. Absolutely unreal. It was one of the few times I wished I was back in L.A. \:\)

Well congrats Rick! Hope you get to do it some more! \:\)

Probably really pissed off a fellow that I know.... he lives a couple of blocks from the bowl. When the system, was redesigned, the poor aim of the cabs makes the sound at his front door about the same as at the FOH mix position. (Not really, but it is quite loud.)

He's a sound guy, and the last time that he was here, he showed me a notebook that he was compiling of facts and figures and measurements, and he also had a number of recordings made from his front door. Nice seat. Can't see much, but the sound is great!
