In an effort to keep from getting burned out on our material and have a little fun at the same time, we did a rehearsal tonight exclusively of songs we've never played before together in this band.
We had a little pool of tunes built up that we'd thought of doing at one time or another, and it was really fun hearing our band put our stamp on two straight hours of songs we hadn't performed previously.
Sure, it was pretty sloppy in places, where one or the other of us weren't 100% familiar. But it was more than worthwhile, and it's definite that some of those tunes, once worked through, will get onto our list.
Try it! You'll like it!

Yeah, that sounds like fun! One of the reasons I enjoy going to "open mic" nights is to play stuff I don't know, or to haul out any old tune I feel like playing. We have some pretty eclectic cats at my favorite jam.
I'd love to do that in the band, but the bass player has enough trouble with stuff he supposedly knows, and he pretty much only knows what we play.

Originally posted by songrytr: How do you guys go about it? On Tuesday, my singer sent his customary email reminding people about the day/time of the practice. My bass player replied to all and said to remember that we were going to try out a new little instrumental/jam montage we'd spoken about.
Then my singer replied and said while we were at it, we should go through "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet. I then chipped in and mentioned we were going to try "Outshined" by Soundgarden. And so on.
So, by Thursday, we had this wacky, eclectic list of songs. We're all very experienced musicians, so as long as it was something we'd all heard often enough, it was easy to just jump in and try out without having to "learn" the tunes per se. Since we'd defined the list a day ahead, it was easy to listen to anything you needed a refresher on before playing. My singer was still downloading and printing out lyrics when I pulled up.
So, having never done them before, we did everyone's suggestions:
- Magical Mystery Tour - Any Major Dude - Evenflow - Outshined - 8 Miles High - Rock and Roll Fantasy - Take Your Whiskey Home - The Crystal Ship - Blvd. of Broken Dreams - White Room
And a bunch of others. Nothing too difficult... mostly stuff we've all played before, just never in this band. And they all sounded great, mostly. We could have played them at a gig without being too embarrassed.
Didn't have to call out changes, though each of us flubbed here and there going into bridges and such. One or two more times through and we'll put the best ones on the regular set.

Oh yeah, there's never any telling what kind of goofy stuff my band will pull out at rehearsals. It's always good to have fun and challenege yourselves!
Actually my friend Kenny's band did something similar at a GIG. They weren't even a cover band, but at the end of their original set one night, they asked the audience to each write a song request on a napkin and they'd try and do at least a part of every song that was requested. Some of the results were pretty hilarious but some were actually great! Somebody requested "Like A Virgin" and Kenny actually sang the whole thing in falsetto, which made it sound kinda like a Prince song. I definitely liked their version better than the original.

Geez, we do that at practically every rehearsal. Our guitar player NEVER stops doodling throughout practice and every now and then we just all jump in on whatever he is dinking around with.
Somebody usually knows half the words or the main signature lick..
Last week it was the theme from Mission Impossible, Walk Away by James Gang and Fever..
Every week something totally different..

This is a common occurance in our rehearsals.
We always take off on tangents. We actually liek it as it keeps things fresh. Usually we all know enough of most any song that someone starts that we all join in within a few measures.
While we are a Journey band, our practices often derail into Rush, Iron Maiden, Dire Straits, and so forth jam sessions.

Indeed, we also pull out an oddity or two at every rehearsal.
The thing that made this different is tha we didn't play a single song we'd played before, in two years together.
Good times!

That's always GREAT!
"White Room" is on my setlist. Bizarre to do acoustically...but it works.

Speaking of bizarre, I heard a bluegrass band do "Keep Your Hands To Yourself, and Spooky" last Friday night.. Mandolin, Banjo, Acoustic Guitar and electric bass.
Amazingly enough it worked.. But how in the heck did they ever decide to try that? One day at rehearsal.....

Do a search for "weasel complains incessantly about his bass player" (or something like that) on this forum. Trust me, with my last bass player... no way in hell!
With my current guy? Easy as pie.
It's so nice now, being surrounded by truly competent (and often outstanding) fellow musicians.
