Greetings from a Keyboard Corner escapee. This is my first post to FTB and I'm hoping you can help me out.

I'm about to start playing out with a band and I'm looking for a powered speaker that I could use as a monitor, and that, for smaller venues, could be used as a PA. Smaller is better, so nothing over a 12" woofer, please. Cheaper is better, too. Lightness and durability are importmant traits. Oh, and it should sound good, too.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Carvin offers some bangin' PA options for cheap. I have the PM15A and I like it a bit.

Don't get a grey JBL Eon. They were meant for a/v presentations.

I've heard some very nice things said about Carvin in general.

I would also suggest something along the lines of the Peavey PR112P. ( http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVPR112P ) I've used the passive version of its big brother, and they have gotten me many compliments.

To digress, I disagree about the Eon. I've been using them as top boxes for my compact (yet triamped!) PA, and they have been excellent for full-blown music.

What may have gotten them their reputation is that they simply don't have an extended low-frequency response. They're pretty much done at 75 Hz, whereas some other top boxes I've had seem to make it down to 50 Hz pretty reasonably. I definitely would not use Eons for full music without a subwoofer of some kind, but non-bass-heavy keys and vocals would make it through an Eon with no problems whatsoever. The other thing about them is that, compared to other PA boxes I've heard, they seem extremely "flat" and "studio monitor-like" to me. If your mix/ EQ job stinks, you will know, and know fast.

I bought a Behringer (yes, I know) powered mixer, the PMH 2000. I use it for a rental unit and also carry it along when I run sound in case my system gets hit by lightning. Sort of a Swiss Army PA in a box.

It's $300, has nine Lo Z inputs, dual 250 watt amps, dual nine band graphics, built in effects, etc. and weighs 27 pounds. I've only used it ten or twelve times, but it is an amazing unit for the money.

I 2nd Danny M's assessment of the JBL Eon's (15 in. G2's). The less equipment I can carry without compromising the sound the better. I use a pair as mains for our 6 piece band, mainly covers. Also agreed that the bottom end is a bit light, which is filled in by our bass & keyboard players' amps quite nicely. (We direct our sound mainly at the dance floor, and are not too concerned with getting it, for example, to the back of a concert hall.) I am now seriously considering a pair of the eon G2 10's for floor monitors. YMMV.
