What's your role in your band? How and why you execute the role the way you do?

My role is bassist...and lead singer. An awesome comibnation, I admit, but an exhilirating experience none the less. I execute my role(s) by focusing on simplifying my bass lines, as well as making the vocals to have the same "vibe" as my bass lines. I do this so I can make it so my two roles don't screw eachother up, as well as make my parts the best they can be.

Boo ya...
You?

Hey JDL, that's not too weird. Our bassist is also our lead singer as well. Not that he isn't weird. \:D

My role is guitar player, co-writer, recording engineer. And webmaster. I help with a lot of booking, promotion and organizational stuff too. We're an independent band so we all have to do whatever needs to be done, basically. Luckily we all pull our weight in that area, but me having the engineering and computer skills plus the music biz experience (from all my years in L.A.), means I kind of end up wearing more hats than anybody. I'm not complaining, I'm just glad we have the means to do what we gotta do.

There have been lots of bassist/singers, JDL...it's not so weird at all.

- Sting
- Ben Orr (Cars)
- Lemmy (Motorhead)
- Geddy Lee (Rush)
- Jack Bruce (Cream)

Probably a bunch more that I'm blanking on now.

My role is as follows:

- All guitars save a few songs where my singer plays acoustic.

- All backing vocals save a few songs where my drummer remembers he's wearing a headset mic.

- All arranging/instrumentation of our covers.

- All "coaching" and instruction for band members that may be having trouble learning their parts.

- Snide sacrcasm at practices.

That's about it.

- Jeff

I play guitar and some keyboards. We all jam, synergistically come up with something, all coming up with our own parts. I also record the band, so have some influence in how it comes out. Last time, we mixed it in a rather democratic fashion, but I think we are leaning towards me taking a stronger guiding hand in the final mix, etc., the way it's recorded, etc., which I'm okay with and have encouraged.

Yeah, and the guy who started out cool, until he found his voice was in demand by every sappy "Magic FM" station in the country...that Peter Cetera guy.

I'm the bassplayer, sing lead on appx. 65% of the songs, harmony on the others, bring new material to the band, make up the rehearsal CDs, arrange most of the music, and cue the band onstage.

-hey, wait a minute...

I want a raise!

Peace,
Underpaid Tim from Jersey

keyboard player (mostly piano these days)
backing vocals
recording band (occasionally)
coaching singer (she's a great singer - just very much the rookie; she likes to run
the arrangements with only piano with me and then with the whole band)
keeping people on their toes! ;\)
scheduling practice (and yelling at people when they miss it)

I'm the bass player, supposedly just a fill-in for the regular dude who's gone on a semi-permanent basis. But I try to be the confidence booster and an honest critic as well. If everyone feels good about what they're doing it sure makes playing in a group way more fun. And fun's what it's all about.

I do everything that thrashole369 does... except for write music. But the other day our drummer asked me... "wanna do some originals?"

I DID pass off the setlist arranging to our singer because I was killing him (he-he) but I think it's time I take it back \:\)
