I work alone. I spent years in bands and frankly I enjoy running my own private autocracy.
It could be a lonely road but that is why I come here. \:\)

Anyone else a solo artist?

I did the one man band thing for about three years. In a lot of ways I like it better. But I am a bit of a control freak. I need a band to keep my head from getting too big plus I miss the stage and a metal band needs live players jumping around in order to really put on a show.

Yep it would not be a metal show with one guy on keys... Gotta go with a band for that. ;\)

hey i'm a onemanbander and i love it.
i paraphrase: "neither a bandleader or a band follower(?) be." i have a hard time musically, being told what someone wants and conversely telling someone what *i* want.
so it all starts and ends w/ me.
it also means i hear a lot of complaining, oneupsmanship and the daily bickering that besets any group of misfits...course they're all in my freakee head

Funny, I guess due to my age (40) ... I picture this guy with a harmonica strapped to his mouth and cymbals between his knees with a bass drum on his back! While playing the banjo!

My how things have changed. I suppose that with a laptop, you could truly be a one man show.

I know that Craig Anderton does this.

There's a guy here in KC who does a very good job of playing organ bass pedals with his feet while playing guitar, harmonica, and singing.

I've wanted to do solo acoustic for some time now, just because it's liberating just not to have other people giving ya shit about what you should or shouldn't do.

By the same token, it's a bit stage-fright provoking. There's nothing to hide behind but you, and if you screw up, it's your ass and your ass alone hanging out there. That's always prevented me from getting into it more. But, I think I can, actually.

I'm a loner a this musicmaking as well.

My day job/travel makes it difficult to commit to be in a working band- and my goals are less about performing live than about creating and getting a decent result on disc.

Im sure I miss some magic that results from interations between band members.
Hey, there are plusses and minuses to everything.

BTW - to me "one man" and "band" are incompatible terms.
Maybe Im a solo recording arteest at some level -but, on my own, Im certainly not a band.

I do think some discussion of methods used by lone wolves would be useful. I Wonder what Peter Gabriel, Todd Rundgren or Moby would have to say bout this?

Do you ever play with yourself? \:D

For instance, I'll crank up the monitors when tracking el. guitar via DI just to pump up the energy level.

I was thinking about using a blow-up doll to simulate the presence of a drummer - but it's too well behaved to be effective at that. And I figure it would constantly be dropping sticks \:D
