In some ways, a band is like a marriage. And spouses usually frown on "side projects".

But, unlike a marriage, some band members do better when they have perhaps, say, a money making gig and a more creative gig. Or a softer/melodic project and a balls (or ovaries as the case may be, Lee) to the wall project.

Do you all feel comfy with side projects, if they don't interfere?

ARRGGH. I am struggling with this issue now. I've been asked to do a side project with some guys that I really, really am into. And all the parties involved (me, my band, the side project guys) are all friends so it's all cool. And it won't take too much of my time, they don't really plan on playing regular gigs... mostly it'll be a recording thing.

And one of my bandmates already plays in another band as well, where he doesn't have much responsibility so it's no big deal.

BUT, whether I personally feel comfy with all that or not is another story. On one hand, it can kinda stir the pot of creativity when you do something new or different from your main band - which ends up helping your main band. But on the other hand, I really do think of my band being like a marriage, I tend to be very monogamous. \:D It can be hard for me to switch gears, and I wonder whether I'll have less space in my brain for songwriting for example, if I'm playing with other people and learning new songs. This already is sometimes a problem with my engineering work - I'll get a client's songs stuck in my head and that can make it hard to focus on our stuff.

I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. Everybody involved understands who my main band is, and that I won't tolerate anything that infringes on that too much. But I'm a little apprehensive. I don't know how some people routinely play in multiple, active bands. I couldn't do that!

If you want to have a long-term band project, then it's almost a must to have side project(s). It will work out fine (usually) if everyone keeps in mind which band is a sideproject and which is "the real thing" (this is usually the most difficult part I've heard)

I'm in a cover rock band. It comes first. But it doesn't take up all my time, and so I do get into other projects. I've been doing a 6-week/year religious play for 12 years (the rock band has only existed for 6). And I've been doing some coffee house type music as well.

When conflicts come up (which has been rare), it's band/theatre group/coffee house. There is no crossover with personnel, and everybody knows my restrictions. Like I say, I haven't had conflicts.

Except when the coffee house thing plays Thursday, the band rehearses Friday, and the theatre group is that Sunday. Sometimes it's too much and I have to decide who I'm going to disappoint. The band, the theatre group, the coffee house folks, or my wife

Balance seems to always be the key.

There are times when the pot of creativity must be stirred. Sometimes the right outside project will do this.

I like that band = marriage analogy. Seems like the closet thing to real life. I'll be checking out other folks comments...
