Dr. K, et. al.:
I am a young engineer, and I want to switch career paths to A&R work. Is this a bad idea? I have been looking around at various labels, and I guess that I am wondering what my first steps should be. I have already ""circled the wagons" with friends and mentors in the biz, but I thought that I should consult the master of career transitions. Also, if I go with A&R, will I really ever be able to go back to engineering or producing and be taken seriously? I need advice, Al.

Jeff Your knowledge of engineering will immediately give you knowledge that most every nascent A&R person does not have. You need to present a resume that is attractive to the hiring person. The engineering experience is a plus, but can you sign a mega-selling newbie ? That's what they'll want to know. AND LONG HAIR IS A DEFINITE NO-NO unless you specialize in metal bands.

Dr. K:
How do you present yourself to the label hiring people and get across that you can sign that hit-generating new artist, or whatever. I know that I indeed CAN do that, but what is the best way to demonstrate that fact?

That's a no-brainer Go out & find one of those acts you can DEFINITELY find, and bring them to the label WITH you as a package. Ambition is the mother of necessity, I have found If you want something bad enough and you actually can deliver, then.... DELIVER!

Al,
That was so obvious, I didn't even think about it. Thanks for that. In your opinion, which label sucks the least? I mean a label that will support creativity and not only pander to the moneymaker of the day. I am not a big Rap/R&B person, in the current sense of the term R&B, not the 50's, 60's term R&B. I like rock and roll. By that I don't mean simply rap-rock, or light punk, just good old roots influenced rock. Yes, I am open to everything, but I want to find a place that SUPPORTS rock. Your thoughts?

well obviously steer clear of the rap labels - after that, they're all the same. Some of the indies are worse thiefs than the majors! Everrbody wants a hit. They dont care what flavor, color or shape it is - if it sells.... just deliver THE GOODS
