Hey all, Here's the deal. The band I'm in got together about a year ago. We had all been in other bands and projects that never got anywhere. When we first got together, we wrote and recorded a few songs, and sent some off to various people and record companies. Luckily (or unluckily), we immediately got offered a record deal. Not a big deal, a small one at an independant company, but a deal nevertheless.
So we proceed to record our first album, but all we do is fight! We fight about what to record, how to record it, what the arrangements should be, what the musical direction should be, who should do what, and on and on. The fighting has become our biggest problem. I keep trying to think of ways to work out disaggreements, and ways to make things fair, so fights can't happen, but it doesn't seem to work.
What should we do? We've got a lot of good songs, and good things could happen, but our fighting keeps getting in the way. Should we just face the fact that we can't get along, and walk away from the deal? Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, John

NOBODY fought more than the 60's band i was in called THe Blues Project and we had a major label deal. The thing with a band is that each person should excel in their responsibilities. One guy should do this & that, another guy should do whatever, etc. THEN it becomes a balance; albeit sometimes precarious or uneven, but a balance nonetheless. If success of any sort is reached, then all should acknowledge "the balance" and respect what it accomplished. Anyone who disrupts it is knowingly jeopardizing what the entirety has done. Fer instance, in the Blues Project, the drummer drummed, the bass player also played flute, the second guitarist also played harmonica, wrote songs and sang, I played keys and guitar, did most of the songwriting, arranging, and sang, the lead guitarist (who started the band) sang lead, and brought in most of the covers we did. If we had been able to keep that balance, we would still be together today. But people tend to oversdtep their roles in bands and that what causes closure. Your situation sounds pretty hopeless. For instance, the abject lesson I've learned from all this is, choose band-mates for their compatability and humaness over their musicianship. Of course, every now and then you get all three in one person and isn't that delightful?

I can sympathize with your problem, but I've been lucky so far....I've gotten to know the musicians I work with personally before dealing with them in too many professional circumstances...I tend to work with the ones that I get along with, looking more at compatibility than talent...It also helps that I make most of the decisions when it comes to material to learn and record...Everybody brings in their opinions, and everything is considered and explained. Good luck, but I agree with Al. Sounds like your situation is pretty hopeless....Good thing about that, is you can learn from it and move on!
