Dr. Al,

We have been playing live in the local area for 2 years now and are wanting to do a few music festivals. Part of the application process is to include a press kit. I have seen referance to press kits in the past, but do not know what goes into it or how to put one together. Any pointers?
Thanks,
Vicki

always have a picture of your band... these days how you look is just as important as how you sound.

A press kit usually has two functions. To educate the press about the artist and to show any good press the artist has received.
A photo is mandatory - an 8x10 glossy print ideal. A biography of the band is next. Concise and not self-indulgent are two good rules of thumb. Then any good press you've gotten. An actual Xerox of the piece as it ran with the name and date of the publication circled or identified. In the 90's EPK's began to be circulated - they were electronic press kits on CDs or videos. That's another route when you get a little more notoriety under your belt. Good luck!

The photos should be black and white, and, not color. It increases your odds of getting it used by about 1000%

Make sure every piece of paper has contact information on it. Kits get seperated, and, someone will see something interesting, and, not know how to reach you.

Also, if you've got press releases that haven't been picked up, throw those in too.

Follow up fast on any phone calls from the media...They won't call until a deadline is looming. and, if you're late, you'll lose!

Thanks for you help, guys! I knew that black and white photo we paid good money for would be needed one day.

Also, keep in mind that the press kit or promo pack is "business" oriented, so follow up is essential. If you send a pack or kit to someone, call them in few days and just ask them that you wanted to make sure they got it, and thank them for any consideration they might have of your act. It shows professionalism on your part.
