A friend of mine made a verbal agreement with a producer, and the agreement was that she would write and sing to some of his tracks in exchange for him to produce a demo for her free of charge. This deal took place in Canada two years ago. My friend now lives in L.A. and went back to visit Canada over the Christmas vacation, she found that the producer had released the songs In Canada and they have become popular in the clubs and Mom & Pop stores. She was never compensated for the work, nor did he ever make good on his promise to produce her demo. I wanted to know if she has any legal recourse or will it come down to her word against his? Is small claims court an option since she now lives L.A. and he is in Canada where the agreemnt was made?

it's that age old situation where she has the right to sue him, she;s RIGHT to sue him, but it cost too much to sue him, unless the reward justifies the suit. It's a slimy thing to do, wot dat guy did. However, if she has a friend who's a canadian lawyer, she might send him a scary letter to collect what is rightfully hers. The fact that the record "company" put out her singing without her signinjg a contract with her is a definite wrong thyat is against the law. Did they sell enough copies to justify a paid-for suit> thats the question.
