I read Backstage Passes when it was first published. Amazingly I found it in my church library! It wasn't until recently that I discovered the updated ...and Backstabbing Bastards. Ah, the ravages of age. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with Al's brilliant career, and I was thrilled to learn how his escapades had continued. I was mighty impressed the first go-round with stories of Dylan and the Stones. Now, I find out in the interim, Al was in on Lynyrd Skynyd, Dylan again, the Tubes and many more. Finishing the book this time, it occurred to me. Al is the Forrest Gump of rock and roll! And that's all I have to say about that!

Yeah I read "Backstage Passes" when it was first published too, and I still laugh for days whenever I think of the "sphincterphone" story...

Certainly not to diminish Al's accomplishments, which include many recordings that absolutely altered the direction of my life...but there is a book by a guy named 'Phil Kaufman' called 'The Road Mangler'. Phil is currently "RM" for Emmylou Harris...but in many ways really is the 'Forrest Gump of rock and roll'.

It's worth the effort to find it and read it...which ain't easy [finding it that is]...and no, you can't borrow my copy

Wasn't Phil Kaufman the guy who snatched Gram Parsons' body?

In one of your recent articles you mentioned "Season of the Witch", and that you were still playing it live. That brought back some memories of the Supersession album I used to have(and played to death). Also, your work on one of Billy joe Shaver's CDs was a textbook of tasteful B-3 and keyboard playing...keep up the good work, see you the next time you're in Austin.
